Default 2010 manual transmission with shifting problems

Just curious if there are any other 2010 owners with any difficulty shifting gears in their manual transmission camrys? I noticed during my test drive that I grinded my way into 2nd once... I thought it might have just been my nervousness with a new clutch at the time. However, I've since put 300 miles on the car and I still have trouble putting it into second gear on a daily basis. Sometimes it grinds a bit, and sometimes it catches or a half second before it pops in. All the gears OTHER than 2nd gear go in like butter as you would expect with a new transmission. I'm not new to a clutch... this is at least my 4th car with a stick, so I don't think I'm doing anything out of the ordinary when shifting.

It reminds me of some older (100,000+ mile Nissan) cars I've had in the past... the syncromesh was wearing out and it would grind going into second or third, so I put in some RedLine MTL and got a little more life out of the transmission... but there shouldn't be a need for that kind of thing on a car with less than 1000 miles on it?!

Anybody else noticing this or anybody have any advice? I was going to call the dealership if it didn't clear up before the 500 mile mark.

I think I might know what you are talking about. I have a 2010 Camry base 6 speed manual. At first, the shifter would not go into second on occasion. I would just have to move to neutral and then try again. It was like there was something blocking the shifter from going into second. The frequency of the problem was getting less, and then I figured it out - there must have been a burr or something, because I just moved the shifter from 1st to 2nd a bunch of times while pusing it to the left HARD. I have never had a problem since, smooth shifting into all gears.

It might be because it is a new car and it is still going through its "breaking in period". If the problem still exists when u put on about 1 to 2 thousand miles on it, i would difinitely take it to the dealer right away.

Yup, new 2010 M6 vehicle, grinds a slight bit going into 2, each and every time.

Car is very new and will keep my eye on things for a while. I'm not overly concerned after reading the other comments here.

Mine never grinded going into second. It just would not go into second until it was "worn in". Zero problems since.

Exact same problem with 6speed 2010 Camry's 2nd gear - It was that way when I bought it brand new in December (I've also been daily driving sticks for 17+ years) - grinds going into second every other time or so, rest of the gears fine. I hoped it would break in, it didn't get better by 1700 miles. Took it to the dealership - they replaced the transmision yesterday - I ground second gear again this morning in the new trans! Guess we're looking at a design flaw.

If Toyota replaced the transmission, might there be a service bulletin?

Damn, I hate to hear that now the manual trans has problems. What's up with Toyota?

Were you told that new transmission was essentially the same or was it left for you to determine?

They said this was a first for them at the dealership - they called toyota main office and were sent a new replacement transmission 2 weeks later - in that time I brought the mileage up to 2250 - same problem today. The work order mentioned problem with syncronizers. (The new one acts exactly like the old one, so I don't believe they installed an upgraded version)

2010 se with the manual and with about 12,000 miles on it never had an issue going into 2nd only thing I do have on cold Canadian days it is stiff going in and takes a prod. When warmed up it is smooth.

When you go from 3rd to 2nd do you get the same problem? An when going from 1st to second try double de-clutching it. Normally only done on non syncromesh trannys going down but just curious.

This is not to give an answer but just curious what results you have.

Thanks

Judge344, sorry to steer the thread away from transmission performance but I see you're from Canada. Can you tell me what your buying experience was in terms of getting the 6 speed manual? Were you able to test drive, was order process long, if in GTA can you mention a dealer who helped you get it? Thanks.

With pleasure.

My experience was awesome.

The top sales person where I bought my car ordered a red non leather manual se for his wife.

They got a black leather moon roof edition. With manual SE I4.

Top sales people get rights.

When they got it they freaked. What nut would buy a I4 Se with leather and moon roof and other add on's.

I had been calling around about a manual and when I contacted this dealer they said they had one. Manual I4 SE that is.

Well I went and talked to the sales man and after talking he took me out to see this SE on a rainy fall day. As soon as I sat in it I said this was above my budget and no point driving it. He just smiled and said take it for a drive (set the hook). We went for a 10 mile drive, and the next day I took it for a 130 mile drive (kept it for the day took the wife for lunch in it). This was after he he showed me a price. And I said yes. They took 2000 g off the top and tossed in the hood protection the side guards and a few other very good items.

They actually found this model a bad sell. Leather manual SE

Sadly that after buying it, he told me, and this guy has award all over his place. An I still talk to him and have sent him another buyer he gave me 100 bucks for it.

Most dealers will only take 2 of them in Canada for sale. So you will be lucky to find one to drive. They will order the rest. But may I suggest drive a SE auto it will give you a feel for the car. The Manual is a nice bit of kit to me. But then having said that therein this post people are complaining about the manual syncro now. I have not had an issue myself.

EDIT: sorry I am in Quebec

I would have taken the leather interior in a second if it had the seat heaters. best i could get here in New England was an SE with cloth, sun roof and a few other overpriced dealer prep items thrown in. I could have waited to place a special order through the dealer but i had the color i wanted in front of me so i went with it as i needed transportation and the cost of a 2 month rental was a big discourager. Also, most of the Toyota dealers I spoke with acted like placing a special order for one was like i was going to cut off their arm. After all was said and done I have no regrets whatsoever though.
