Accidentally left sportsmatic in third while on highway.
hello everyone.....
I own a v6 2007 camry se auto with the sports shift. About 18k on it. The only real practical use I know of the sportsmatic function is to drop it down into 3rd gear if I want a boost in speed to pass someone. Then I put it back in D. Now while on the expressway I put it 3rd and maybe hit like 70-75. But I forgot to put it back in D and kept it in 3rd for another 10 to 15 minutes while driving an average speed of 65-70. So at that point I noticed something felt a bit off(could have just been my imagination) and saw that I was still in 3rd. So I put it back to drive and everything seemed normal.
my question at the end of this tale is would this have did any damage to the tranny? And also what's the best use of the sports shift feature? Like when should I shift up or down.
The computer over rides its and shifts it into the proper gear. If it was a true manual you probably would have.
Actually, the computer does NOT override anything here. That's why it will hold in a gear. But the OP must surely be an idiot not to notice the noise or look at the tachometer.

No damage was done other than wasting a little fuel. Your engine has a rev limiter and if the RPM's got too high, the rev limiter would have momentarily shut down the engine.

wasted fuel, that's all. Now don't do it again cause we need to save those dinosaurs.
Sadly I have to agree with njerald, hearing the engine making too much noise should be an instant giveaway that something is not right... unless your "music" bang like... But than U should feel that U press on the gas much deeper than normal to go the normal speed.
First of all, you don't shift into 3rd with an automatic in order to pass, you just hit the gas and the car downshifts for you. The only reason i have ever used the lower gears on a automatic is to go down hills in the snow.
For you to be going 75mph in 3rd gear you must have been at over 5000 RPM

First of all why did you need to insult the OP? how would you like if someone that you don't know calls you an idiot or something worst.
Second he could have his music playing loud not to hear the engine noise, and are you looking at you tachometer all the time while you driving?
And, my uncle has a Challenger with the sport shift and the computer does override and shift properly, if forgotten or left in the sport shift mode....

Too bad our Camry's isnt a Challenger. If its going to shift or override automatically if you forget, might as well just leave it on AUTO. It does the same thing.
On the Camry, theres no way for you to not notice. If you're in manual and at 3rd gear, you'll be at higher RPMs and you'll feel and notice that your car isnt going any faster.
