2002 Camry SE Shifter and HVAC Lights

My wife has a 2002 Camry SE 4 cylinder. The indicator lights on the shift lever started going out. If we tapped the console they would come on again for a while. But now they stay off n o matter how much we tap it. I thought that is just the bulb or a fuse issue. But today two of the background lights on the HVAC console have gone out as well. Are these issues related or are the bulbs just dieing at the same time? I wondered if there was some sort of regulator or something that is not supply the correct power?

Also at the same time as the shifter lights going out the check engine light came on. Then when we tapped the lights and they came on the check engine light went out. Is the check engine light linked to the shifter lights?
