Squeaky clutch

How do I go about chasing this noise down?

I originally thought it was temperature related because it started happening when I left the car outside when it was in the low-30s but it's in the high 40s low 50s now. If I garage it, the indoor temperature is typically 10 degrees warmer (60F) inside and it still occurs intermitently. Sometimes it went away after the engine warmed up and would go away for a couple days. Other times it would happen even after a 60 mile drive but go away on the return trip.

Then I thought maybe it's related to my inclined driveway - nope.

I've taken it in 2 times under warranty and the issue cannot be diagnosed because both times the noise went away by the time I get to the dealer (4 mi) and doesn't come back for a day or two afterwards.

Engine need not be running and it comes from the engine bay. I can't hear it if the doors and windows are closed. Only happens when pushing the pedal down, no noise when letting it back up.

You need a new throwout bearing. Its a bearing inside the clutch that allows it to turn with the engine while you are in neutral or changing gears.
Unfortunately the trans has to come out for this so unless the other the clutch parts are like new, you'll probably want to change the pressure plate and clutch disc while the trans is out.

If it's still under warranty, bring it to Toyota.

If you've read my first post, the car has been in twice only for the issue to disappear by the time I get there an reappear a day or two later.

anything is possible nowadays. nowadays quality control on parts is a lot
worse then before.

anyways sure it's entirely possible the throwout (release) bearing is bad, look at the parts diagram, that is the part that the noise can logically be traced back to. I can't hear the noise so if you think it is something else, maybe it is.

I'd have my doubts RE TO bearing - if the noise is coming on with the engine off. TO bearing will squawk with clutch pedal pressed, but typically only with the engine on. Clutch fork, pedal linkage, slave cylinder are more likely suspects given the symptoms. I'd start by lubing the components that are reachable with the recommended (White Lithium, IIRC) grease.

I'll give it another shot...it's been squeaking consistently for 3 days straight every time I press the clutch.

Kinda sucks...dealers here don't provide transportation assistance. When I ask for a ride to work, they point to the bus stop 2 blocks away...

Maybe try asking in Scion forums. These transmissions aren't common on Camry but probably more so on Scion TCs and perhaps the overgrown Scion bB.

so the slave cylinder was the definite cause? mine started doing the same thing sometime between 25k and 30k miles. speaking of which anybody know where to find a replacement clutch, besides from toyota? i have a feeling my dealer will charge way more than necessary for the parts

well thats lame. but the noise im hearing seems identical to yours, i can only hear it when the doors or windows are open, and its with the engine running or off, and it goes away and comes back randomly. i was hoping with all the recent recalls i could milk my dealer for a new clutch...but that was a fail
