5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I did some searching through the threads but couldn't find anything on point, so here goes:
I have a 2007 XLE-V6, bought new 10/2006, 39,500mi., and recently I had the issue of the bursting oil line that others have been having. Prior to that happening, I have been hearing a noise from the engine since the beginning of December. The noise is a ticking sound/knocking sound that occurs as I accelerate in 1,2, and 3rd gear on cold starts. This noise persists up until the time the engine reaches it's ideal operating temperature, and then it just goes away.
The engine "expert" at my local dealership drove in it with me, and it only happens when the vehicle is in drive, not when idling or in reverse, so it has to be in the drivetrain somewhere. He said it shouldn't be a problem, since it does go away, but it's infuriating to hear it every morning and afternoon when I start my car. Anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? Have the same issue?
Sounds like piston-slap. It's because of excessive piston-bore clearance. Even new Lexus on dealer lots do it. The gaps close as the engine reaches temperature. It's cheapened manufacturing is all.

Hey, our 2008 SE V6 does the same thing. When cold after sitting long periods, like overnight, sounds like a Chevy V8 w/ piston slap or rod knock. Once warmed up - quiet as a new one. Problem is, it just started this crap about 33,000 miles. I change oil/filter every 3000 miles, so that's not the issue. WTF? Took to dealership yesterday - they say all of them do it after about 25,000 miles? You gotta be kidding me! My 2004 SE V6 (sold to my parents) was just traded in last week with 84,000 miles - never did that mess.

Well, it's going in to the dealership tomorrow for its recall treatments and I'm going to ask them to look at it again, as i'm noticing some reduced engine power at times, there's some delay in responsiveness that wasn't there before and it's upsetting that my XLE V6 is acting like a 4cyl. I paid too damn much for it to act this way, as well as I treat it.
Haven't noticed any power loss or fuel mileage drops. Just the dang noise when it's cold. I swear, what has happened to Toyota quality? I'd expect this with "other" makes.

I believe they are hydraulic lash adjusters, meaning no valve adjustment should be required. It doesn't sound like a valve ticking or tapping, but more like a knocking sound, like a rod knock.

Mine will do the same thing I think. What I hear is the sound of some valve clatter when cold. The mixture is just a little lean. Higher octane gas cured it, but I can easily live with a little valve noise for a block or two. If his problem persists and he feels loss of power I would suspect the computer is not feeding fuel at the correct rate.

"People who think they know it all are particularly irritating to those of us who do."
It seems normal and has been going on forever here.
Edit: Now that read that TSB - I guess I'm getting that done. Thx Njerald. Funny how some things you just assume as "normal wear and tear" can be addressed with a TSB. Heres a +1 to a TSB Sticky, for those of us with symptoms that could be addressed by TSBs.
i have the same problem with my V6 2002 and it goes away as soon i put in unleaded gas only, even in the camry manual it states that you will get a knocking sound from the engine when using cheap gas.
I don't have a V6 but I do have a memory and can SEARCH...........could be this.
BTW - I did SEARCH - that's how I found this thread. I am not getting a cheap gas knock or tick. This is only occuring when engine is cold after sitting overnight. After it warms up, problem gone. Sounds like piston slap or rod knocking, not like a valve tapping or ticking.
