engine top plate removal

Yesterday i was checking over the engine in my 2005 camry with IMZ-FE engine prior to taking a trip. I decided to take the top plate off. I took the 3 funny looking screws out and removed the oil filler cap. I expected the plate to lift right off. Didn't happen. It would move but not enough for me to see what was holding it. I didn't want to pull on it too hard and break something. Any help would be appreciated.

Put the screws back and grap near one of the screws and pull hard, then do it near another screw.

They are not screws in a normal sence, but fasteners and they pop in and out with firm pressure!

He's talking about the valve cover. He's better off keeping his hands off things since he seems not to know what he is doing nor why.

Who is talking about the valve cover? Not me. This is a plastic cover about a foot square on top of the engine held on at the front edge with 3 allen head female nuts. I am removing it to check for any trash under it as there some leaves in the engine compartment.

The three allen screws are captured so you can't take them out. Unscrew each one several turns and do like wise to the others and continue to do so until the cover is free. THE cover is held on the back side by a friticion clamp that can be freed by pulling up in the middle on the rear side. A word to the wise. Do not try to unscrew one allen fastener without also unscrewing the other two. Like I said, these fasteners are captured and you can [will} crack the cover is you try to unscrew one. Hopes this helps. Wish I had known this six years aga.

The three allen head nuts are captured so you have to unscrew each one several turns at a time so as to not put the cover in a bind. After the nut are completely unscrewed, pull up on the back side of the cover. It is held in place by a friction clamp. Hopes this helps. Wish I had this same information six years ago. Guess who has a crack near one of the allen fasteners? With my FAA A&P license and $1.50, I can get a good cup of coffee almost anywhere.
