2003 Camry auto I4 ATF capacity

How many quarts of ATF does a 2003 Camry automatic transmission I4 takes? Manual listed as 3.7 quarts for drain and refill but I want to know how many quarts in total. By the way I have no problem reading the oil dip stick but the ATF dipstick is a whole different story.

I'd just completed a complete flush of the ATF through the cooler return line and now I don't know if I need to add more ATF or maybe even overfill it already (I'd filled up exactly 8 quarts).

You have a filter instead of a strainer. So a fluid exchange is only half a job. I'd recommend that you drop the pan and change out the filter every 30K miles, if not 15K miles. Cleanliness and accuracy are important in transmission work.

I personally would put Mobil-1 Fully Synthetic ATF (new formulation suitable for Mobil 3309). Instead of using the dino Mobil-3309 that's relabeled as Toyota T-IV.

So what fluid did you use?

For many applications Walmart's SuperTech Mercon-V (also suitable for Mobil-3309/T-IV) synthetic blend is a more cost effective way if you don't want to go Mobil-1 or Valvoline MaxLife (also fully syn).

I drained out the ATF and then dropped the transmission pan and replaced the strainer. Then I assembled back everything and proceed to disconnected the return cooler line and flushed about 3 quarts of ATF out. I use Toyota ATF T-IV by the way.

I was stupid enough not to measure how many quarts came out so now I'm stuck with guessing how much to put in. For the life of me I cannot find out how much ATF our 5th generation Camry takes.

Hey thanks for the suggestion I will be using syn ATF next time.

Hey thanks a lot, but all I could find is both U140E and U241E for 2002-2004 Camry dry spec is 9.1 quarts. Could you link where you got your source from?

Yea your right but it's weird that 02-04 Camry's U241E transmission are the same yet 02 Camry listed spec is 9.1 quarts while 04 Camry is 8.7 quarts. I got the spec right off camrystuff.com
