Need help programming the key

hi all, i just came back from my dealership and needless to say, i was not very happy with the service.

i got the key from ebay which is the denso version. i went in and the service repair guy said the parts guy will cut it free, but programming would cost $131.

so i figured since the key came with a set of instructions on how to program it, i thought i try it.

when i got home, i tried it twice and still not working.

i'd rather pay $131 on some car parts for the camry then to have the key programmed. can someone help me out? mine also has a trunk release, which doesn't say how to program on the instructions.

here's the link to the photo in original size

If it is what i am picturing, the key with the remote on the handle, then the key and remote need to be programmed separately. The instructions they gave you are for programming the remote part only (including the trunk release). The key code has to be programmed to the immobilizer ECU via scan tool (techstream). I have heard of other aftermarket tools that are capable of this but have never used them. The dealer is probably charging you for half of an hour of labor for each process.

Is your Camry a Gen 5 or 6? I am guessing that it is a Gen 6 since you said you need to program the key. The Gen 5 has a separate key and remote, Gen 6 has an in-key remote.

If you have a Gen 6, I believe you must have it programmed at the dealership because all of the Gen 6 Camrys now come with the immobilizer standard which means the chip in the key has to be assigned a code for your car. I am not sure if this affects the remote keyless entry functions or not...I don't own a Gen 6.

sorry guys, i should have posted up the photo of the key to make it more clear. as for the dealership, i don't think charging $131 is right man. that's just like ripping you off and taking advantage; especially after i already bought the car there. sigh...

anyone in the san jose area that works for toyota service dept? hehe

i have the 2010 camry (6.5 gen). here's the photo of the key i'm trying to get programmed.

This has been discussed already in the switchblade key thread - Switchblade keys!!

Gen 6 has transponder key chip. Key will need to be programmed by dealership in order for ignition to work and keyless entry.

Cough up the cash or have a key that can open the door and trunk. When I mean open, I dont mean keyless. I mean sticking the key in the hole and turning it.

a dealership should charge 1 hour of labor to do this. Just call around and find the lowest hourly rate in the area

I was quoted $100 to program the key. If you think dealerships are too pricey, go to a locksmith that deals with cars. Ask them how much they charge.

100 bucks to program the key is not bad at all.

Didnt know home depot does programming.

Also, with dealerships they get your VIN # and there is a code. This code is entered in to their machine that cuts the key. This is more accurate than those at locksmith which puts your key on one side and the blank on the other and just duplicate it.
