Gen5 Has Anyone Here Ever Painted Their Dash/Door Panels?

As some of you know, I have Black Leather seats on the stock grey LE interior. I like the two tone, but I now want to paint the interior charcoal black to match the leather, and finish it off by picking up a black 3 spoke SE steering wheel from a junkyard. I'm not a stranger to DIY, so taking everything apart, prepping it and painting it wont be a problem. What I'm concerned about is the material. The dash material on the Gen 5 LE appears to be some sort of soft vinyl with a scaly texture. It doesn't look like paint would adhere to it too well. Hard plastic like the door panels I wouldn't worry about, but this soft vinyl.... I don't know if its a suitable material to be painted, and I'm thinking the paint would flake/peel off. Just wondering if anyone has ever painted the interior of a Gen 5 and what your experiences were.

ScrooYoo,
Here is a good thread of a guy who painted his whole interior of his 3rd gen Altima. I am a member of this forum too As I owned an Altima before I totaled it. Here is a link to his process and materials used.
He did a great job.

Thanks for the link Glenn. That guy did a really nice clean job. Looks like he painted his steering wheel too. When you owned your Altima, did you notice if the dash material was soft vinyl or hard plastic? I'm trying to determine whether paint or dye would be the best way to go.

I had a 1998 Altima and the dash was made of a soft vinyl like our camry's and most Honda's ... There were other guys on there that did their interiors like mine as well and they came out awsome. They did use the adhesion promotor first.

Quick question. Are these leather seat covers? Or was the old leather or fabric taken out and replaced?

Its a Katzkin leather interior kit. The car came with cloth on the seats and door panels which were removed and replaced with leather. The pics were taken immediately after I bolted the seats back in, so the leather has tightened significantly since then and is now smooth with no creases (after I let it bake in the sun for a few days). Looks better now then when it was first installed. Here is an old thread from when I was doing the install:

I'm installing a leather interior kit right now and need your help!

i painted the door panels on another car one time. With the special vinyl paint they make. i cleaned the heck out of them first and then painted, but the results were not satisfactory.

I did not even try a color change just a different shade of the same color, and the old color showed through. Even after 3 coats. Also it all peeled off after a month. After that i did not try to paint the dash. I just bought a cover.
