5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi All. I'm getting ready to do my first oil change in my '10 Camry LE and I'm trying to figure out what filter to go with. I called the dealer on a non related issue and started talking to the parts guys and of course they recommended I use the Toyota filter. Guy said that he's heard issues with engine knock with folks that have tried other filters. The only positive I've heard in terms of a filter is a Pure One. I plan on using Mobil 1 Syn, and thought about using their filters, but I've not heard too much about them. I've seen much written that's negative about Fram, so I guess I'll stay away from that. Anyone else have a suggestion? Thanks.

Engine knock happens even on new Toyota/Lexus 3.5L on the dealer lot. Well, that's actually "piston slap" because of loose production tolerances. Cost cutting I guess.
Purolator's PureOne is an excellent oil filter. I don't know if the PureOne line is always using the excellent Micronic media made in the US. I know PremiumPlus sometimes has imported filters that Purolator doesn't make.
Your 2.5L 2AR-FE engine uses a European style eco-friendly filter element. So I'd recommend that you buy from OEM (dealer or online bulk as suggested) unless the PureOne box at your local parts store has one made of the Micronic media made in the US. The last time I checked they were still only PremiumPlus using imported filters. That might have changed.
I'd use PureOne over Mobil-1. No Frams. If you can't get a PureOne with Micronic media, then stick with OEM. Keep all your receipts for warranty purposes.

I use a K&N P1003 filter with German Castrol 0W-30 oil. Love this set up and the slight increase in MPG. The K&N filter is very easy to get off with the 1" nut on it.
I use a mobil one. I might go back to stock after I run through my stash I don't know yet. I will say that the mobil filter is shorter than the oem. This makes removing it from my Camry much more difficult. I have a filter wrench from wally world and it will not remove it. It will install it, I just do a quarter to half turn past hand snug. I just had a night mare yesterday with it. I even did the old screwdriver though it and couldn't get enough room to get good leverage. I finally bought the specfic Toyota wrench and even that wouldn't remove it. I ended up getting one of these http://www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=1224
Any way back to the question at hand. I belive in Mobil oil and filters. I have used them exclusively for about 750k miles on several vehicles. They claim to filter to one micron. I don't know about the other filters but I know that if the regular parts store filters did they would shure brag about it. Fram had a big campaign to tell you that they dipped thier filters in grippy goop, I am sure they would mention one micron if they did filter that fine.
Mobil-1 is a very high efficiency filter. Didn't see it in Pep Boys but Amazon sells packs of 2 for about $37 (~$18.5 each)! Personally, I'd change out the wimpy sized filter more often then leaving an expensive one in there for the long haul.
I only saw PremiumPlus standard line of Purolator there. Made in the US. Looks OK. But you might not get a price advantage over the OEM bulk with that.
So if you find PureOne or Mobil-1 those would be fine. Then it's lower price of either the Premium Plus or OEM.
BTW, the OP's 2010's gone eco-friendly with filter element insert. No canister.
