Gen5 Rushing Liquid Sound!!!!!!!!

What in the HELL?!?!?!?!?

For the last 3 months... especially when I start the car cold... When she starts I hear LIQUID!!! Right behind the dash on the drivers side. It sounds like liquid rushing through a tube!

When I start moving and the car is cold and I accelerate I can hear it speed up through some kind of hose / pipe / tube. When she warms up I really dont hear it anymore.

Its like bubbles in a closed system and when the fluid isnt moving... all the bubbles collect behind the dash.

I dont get it. Anyone know what this might be???

With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap and verify that is full. Replace the cap and check the overflow tank to verify that it is roughly half full--full to the line on the tank that tells you how full to fill. Top off the radiator and over flow with the recommended antifreeze for your model.

We noticed the same noise in our 2003 Camry. It was when we first started the car and started down the driveway and it would stop after we'd driven a short distance. What I discovered was that the coolant reservior was near the "min" line. I added coolant to the "max" line and that settled it for me.

i just checked my 2008 camry. It has 45,000+ miles and i have never touched the coolant. the level in the overflw tank is extreamly low. about 1 or 2 inches from the bottom. My question is, can i just add tap water to into the radiator until it is full?? or should i go to the dealership and purchase the coolant and add it to the radiator and overflow tank? what about a complete flush... I also have that water rushing sound when the car is first started in cold weather.

Thanks

If you have 2005 and newer camry, buy the pink coolant (pre-mixed, called super long life coolant (SLLC)). Do not mix the pink and red coolant.

im guessing the coolant at the top? but the second one, water can be added, sooooo wont it be a better value since you get 2 gallons after added water 50/50??

I had noticed the same water rushing sound over the last few weeks... in my 02 camry.

The coolant tank level was near empty. I have filled with water for now till half full... gotto wait and see.

I read another post that said it could be blown head gasket/stripped head bolts. Scared the crap out of me. Hope that is not the case!

Check also the coolant level in the rad when cold. Is it up to the radiator neck?

I think you are hearing coolant wiht entrained air being pumped through the heater core. There is no coolant shut off valve like those that came on older cars. The temperature control on newer cars actually regulates a mix of hot and cold air to achieve the desired discharge temperature. When the coolant surge tank level gets low, air is sucked back into the cooling system via the radiator cap which is actually a two-way valve. Always check the overflow tank to make sure the level is near the upper mark. You don't have to pay Toyota $24.00 for a gallon of 50/50 coolantl. Use Zerex Asian Car coolant which sells for $12.00 at NAPA. This formulation is very close to Toyota's and I wouldn't be surprised to find that Valvoline makes Toyota coolants.Regards

Look at your underhood insulator for coolant residue above the water pump... The rushing liquid sound was also on my car mostly on cold startup, and it was caused by low coolant due to a leaking water pump. If you see a stripe of white on the hood insulator above the water pump or pink/white crusty stuff on the water pump, there's your problem.
