New camry owner with a question about gear lights on dash...
07 Camry I4 please come inside and look
This might apply to others too, but specifically I am looking for 07 camry I4 cars.
I recently bought a 07 camry se with 28000 miles on it.
When manually shifting, the 4 does not light up. I can make L, 2, 3, and D light up, but when manually put in the 4 position, the D lights up. When put into 4 while driving in D it does not change gears.
While I had the car in today for the accelerator pedal recal, I asked the dealership about this.
They said their diagnostic scan came back clean, and they tested another 07 camry se and it did the same thing.
I called dealership today, and they said it was normal. I do not see how it could be though.
Unless there is something different between '07 and '09 (which I'm sure is NOT the case), your dealer is incorrect. If I shift over to '4', the 'D' light turns off and the '4' comes on.
Maybe go back and have them compare to another '07 - '09 on their lot...?
Probably just a bad LED. They'd have to pull apart the cluster to fix/replace.........not sure about you, but I wouldn't let them do it to mine.

Good luck!
Thank you for your reply. The strange thing is even when I put the car into 4 the D stays lit up. I would think if the bulb was burnt out I the D would still go off wouldn't it?

Ahh, good point! I missed that --- sorry.
While I still wouldn't want them tearing into my dash/cluster (just my preference), it is odd that 'D' stays on.
When driving, say a steady 45mph, can you feel the rpm's jump if you shift over to '4' ? If so, it would seem it's shifting fine, and maybe just an issue with the LED switch. If you don't feel the shift into '4', you definitely should have them look at it again to determine why it's not going into '4' properly.
Still worth having them compare to another model, and then you can decide how to proceed.
Did you buy it from a dealership? If so bring it back--definitely not normal and can signify major problems down the road.
I bought it from a small car lot. It is still under warranty so I will try to get them to look at it.
When driving down the road at 50 or so, if I shift to 4 the tranny does nothing. But I can feel the car shift 5 times then the torque converter feels like it locks up.

The dealer doesn't know what he is talking about......
The tranny shifts into 5th about 48-50 mph so that's not a good test.
At 2,000 RPM in 5th locked you will be going about 63 mph. You can shift to 4th there and the RPM should jump.

So mine is for sure shifting into 5th because that is right around where my tach would be at when going that speed. But cruising at hwy speeds, shifting to 4 does nothing.
I will take it in to them and see what they say. The car only has 28000 miles on it so I do not see why I would have a problem with them looking at it.
I was hoping it was a common issue and there was a tsb or something on it.
I had a similar problem with my '06 Tacoma double cab. I think mine started with a spilled pint of Iced tea in the console. Sometimes certain gear lights would work and sometimes they wouldn't. Sometimes a little wiggle of the shifter would fix it. I noticed that the D would always work but I would lose the 3 and 2 sometimes. The way that I understand it, there is a gear indicator switch way down in the console.
I took it to the dealer just before my Platinum warranty was finished and they fixed it, if I recall correctly it was a $300 repair job. The dealer even had to keep the truck an extra day since it was so hard to get down in there and replace the switch. I really don't know if the iced tea had anything to do with it but they covered it.

Well that's good news if it's a switch problem. No one want's a transmission issue.

The RPM should increase about 800 when you shift to 4th from locked 5th @ 60-65 mph.

Your dealer is clueless............the 4 should light up and it it should both shift through 4th gear while accelerating and it should downshift from 5th to 4th gear as I have explained previously.
