Watch Those Old Oil Filter Seals

I goofed up an oil change today and thought i would post about it to perhaps spare someone else a similar problem.

I changed my oil and filter on my 2002 V6 and i was in a hurry. (Mistake #1.). I drained the oil pretty fast (it only had 2500 miles since the last change) and spun off the old filter. Dropped it into the drain pan without looking at it (mistake #2). smeared the oil on the gasket and spun on the new one until it seemed tight (mistake #3).

Added the oil (5 qts). Then started it up. Fortunately i kept an eye on the oil idiot light, it did not go out after 5 seconds. I shut off the engine and checked the level. Low. Add more oil, like a dummy. Start again. Light still does not go out!
So i think, now what had changed - the oil filter. I check it and oil is pouring out of it. I try and screw it tighter and seems to get tight then gets loose again. Finally i unscrewed it and felt around, yep - the old filter gasket is still on there! It had come loose off the old filter, and stayed on the engine when i screwed the new filter on.

Remove old gasket, check new filter for gasket, screw new filter on again. Add 5 quarts (!) oil to top up.
I ran it maybe a total of 10 seconds with no oil from the gushing filter, hope i didn't damage anything in there... That's what i get for using cheap oil filters! Lesson learned, i will not fail again to take 2 seconds to check the old oil filter and make sure the old gasket didn't get left behind on the engine!

What brand filter? I've never had this happen with any Purolator or Napa filter.

I don't think you caused any damage. I use Mobil 1 oil and filter.

You should be fine.

Always check and remove old gaskets, filter, pan, valve cover, brake caliper banjos, etc etc.

The damaged you caused was proably to your wallet.

Anyways how come you changed the oil so soon at 2500?

Dont you take a look underneath before and after starting the car to check for leaks?
