As some of you know, I'm a grad student, and have been moonlighting as a taxi driver for the past few years. The gen 5 camry has been an amazing taxicab, taking all of the crazy abuse like a champ, getting driven hard, well over 500 miles per week, and still looks and drives like brand new.
Last night, I took a call from dispatch and picked up an older guy from a hotel downtown. Loaded up his luggage in the trunk, and he told me he was going to the airport. From downtown to the airport is about a $60 cab fare, so not bad for about 20 minutes of work.
Anyways, he gets in the front seat and we start the usual cabbie/passenger small talk. All of a sudden he gets really quiet. He looks around, then looks at me and says "IS THIS A TOYOTA?!?!"
I look at him and say "yep, it's camry."
he says "stop the car. let me out."
I thought the guy was just joking so I started laughing sarcastically to humor him (in the back of my head I was rolling my eyes)
The guy then starts FREAKING OUT
I was like "are you frikkin' serious??? you really want me to stop the car and let you out?"
The guy starts yelling like a maniac, so I pulled over, popped the trunk and left him on the curb with his luggage. I then see him pull out his cellphone to call for another cab.
The guy was either an absolute moron, or had some kind of anxiety disorder. Anyways, thanks CEOs/Management of Toyota for ruining the most reliable car company in the world, and screwing things up to the point where it affects my business.
