5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I need help on determining what is the cause of this noise that my 2009 Camry SE is making.
I had recently used my car to help my friend move some boxes and clothes to his new home and on the way there, my car suddenly makes this rattling sound. Once I had unloaded the stuff out of my car, the noise reoccurs whenever it gets near 3000 rpms.
I took it to the dealership but they couldn't find what was wrong with it. They told me that the noise came with high mileage but I have had the car for almost 2 years and it has less than 20,000 miles on it.
The noise sounds like a piece of metal dragging on paved concrete.
If anyone has any ideas on what might the problem, please let me know. Thanks!
We need more information. Is it dragging or vibrating? In front of you, behind you in the trunk, under the car? Muffled sound or real metalic and loud? Rev the engine to 3k and it makes the noise sitting still?
Lot's of things could go wrong here, but if it is rattle, look for sheet metal around the exhaust system or in exhaust manifold area that might have come loose and makes noise at specific frequencies.

The sound occurs when the car shifts gears the first time after accelerating and sometimes if I need to accelerate when it is already in motion. (For example: If I'm on the freeway and I need to accelerate to pass another driver, the sound will occur when I start to accelerate.)
It only happens in forward drive, not in reverse.
The sound doesn't occur at any turns.
The sound doesn't occur at a standstill, only when it is in motion.
The sound basically stops after the car is done shifting gears the first time. I don't hear again unless I need to accelerate quickly.
If by dragging, you mean that the car is struggling to move, as in something is holding the car back from accelerating, then yes, it is dragging. I am very sure that my car is not vibrating. At first, I thought it came from the muffler but I checked and that isn't the problem. I think it might be coming from under the car but I'm not sure. I guess it is a metallic sound.
I hope that is enough information, if not, please let me know. Please excuse my wording in the post, for I am not knowledgeable in automotive. Thanks!
The sound you are describing sounds very similar. If so, and you are still covered under the factory warranty, take it to the dealership and make sure to replicate the problem and reference the TSB number in the post.
Thanks thrawnis for your help but the link that you gave me seems to have a different problem from what I have. My noise only occurs when I accelerate past 3000 rpm and it is very loud. Nothing causes this noise except for the acceleration.
Do you think a Toyota mechanic will sit in my car while I take a drive and show him the noise I'm talking about?
I will try to get a video posted on youtube so everyone can see and hear what I'm talking about. Thanks for everyone's help. I really appreciate it.

Yes, just tell them u want to go along for the ride. I had to do that with 3 or so of my problems. The mechanic keep coming back saying they couldn't find the problem.
I finally got the sound on a video. Please check it out and let me know what the problem might be. Also if there is any suggestion on what needs to be seen in the video, please let me know and I will see what I can do.
So you said it started after you helped a friend move, did you put a bunch of weight in the back seat, in the trunk. Where do you move them to, did you take any big bumps? Is it possible that you bottomed out?

Thanks for responding. The sound actually started while I was driving my friend's stuff to his new home. We had to drive about an hour away and the sound occurred around half way there. We took mainly the local roads and I don't remember ever driving over any bumps.
In the trunk, there was some boxes that totaled to be around 100 lbs. In my back seat, there was just a bunch of clothing items, as well as in the passenger seat. My car did feel a little heavy and hard to move but it didn't compare to my two big cousins sitting in the back seat.
I'm not sure what "bottoming out" means but is that covered under the warranty?
What I heard was sheet metal rattling. Look under the car, starting at the rear along the exhaust pipe. Look for any metal heat shields around the gas tank and between the pan and the exhaust pipe. Move the pipe back and forth a bit if possible. I don't think the move had anything to do with this, but I do think that you have some thin sheet metal piece that is perhaps loose or bent and it making this noise at certain vibration frequencies. In any event, I suspect it is not a major deal, but the dealer should be able to take care of this if still under warranty.
