Wheel bearing sounds usually increase with speed and probably won't show up just in a range and then disappears/lessens. Might want to check tires (balance/rotate) and alignment. What brand of tires are you using?
You can check to hear if the pitch changes in S-turns. Find a safe lot to do this. The noise on the bad wheel bearing increases with load (for instance, on the outside of a turn).
As far as the lesser quality of today's Toyota, I think the grandson Toyoda also agrees with you about the MBA bean counter types flushing the family name down the drain. I like today's Detroit powertrain enginnering but still think their packaging looks like the designers have never seen an iPod or iPhone.

Out of warranty now so hope this isn't a major fix. This car been a headache from day one. Dealer is little help. Went to another dealer and they sent be back to the first one. Major water leak into car for first year went unnoticed due to unconnected drain tubes in moonroof. Entire headliner and carpet was replaced. Lots of rattles and squeaks now but am living with them as dealer won't do any more to fix them as well as reconnect radio antennea. 27000 dollare car with only on station working. Thats Quality?? Will dump this thing as soon as I can. Sorry to vent. Let me know on the howling thing.
Thanks
