My Camry POPS!!!

Maybe you guys can help me with my problem here, sometimes I hear a loud pop from my exhaust (I have vibrant muffler) when downshifting / after I punch and let go of the gas while still in the same gear, is this engine backfire or misfire? Is this normal?

I still have the cat converter and I only changed the muffler, it's done at a muffler shop by the way.

I only change the air filter to K&N and the muffler on the car, everything else is completely stock.

Is it because of the fuel that I use? Cause I recently changed from 87 to 91 then back to 87.

I think the car is to early to have the problem right? It's a 2009 Camry 4-Cyl.

Also this doesn't happen on every deceleration, only on rare cases. Could it be something else? Maybe that's how the muffler is designed? Cause I never heard this when using stock muffler, maybe cause I can't hear it with the stock muffler?

I'm totaly confused and I'm not good at this at all.

Thanks guys!

im sure its not a big deal, does it always happen?

im not hte best with motors and what not but im sure someone will chime in,

sounds like backfire to me ... but from a camry ? haha

anyways, since you say its whne you punch the gas and let off, sounds like its thee unburned fuel "backfiring"

Buy a V6 Camry and you won't need need to punch the gas so much plus you'd get proper engine sounds without aftermarket mufflers.

Well it does sound cool when it pops and ppl back off immediately!

This only happens when I'm slowing down, not all the time, and not when speeding up or shifting to a higher gear. If I drive normally, it feels like a smoothie.

No check engine lights or whatsoever. I think the car has a mind of its own n trying to show off?

It happens when you slow down?

I don't understand, does it happen when you are downshifting (going into a lower gear then flooring the gas to get a burst of speed) or engine braking (shifting to a lower gear to slow down the car)?

Put the original muffler back on, or replace what you have with a new oem muffler. Likely scenario here is that the back pressure has changed somewhat allowing for the the backfire.

It doesn't happen when I shift into lower gear and floor it, but sometimes it happens when engine braking.

So it's really just the muffler? Is it bad if I just leave it alone? Cause this is the first time I heard this and people with aftermarket mufflers don't have this problem? Or maybe they can't hear it?

So it's normal right? It won't damage anything? I kinda like it.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

not being cheap, its being smart.
His car doesnt require the 91, and his motor isnt pinging with the other gas so why waste money on the 91 ? Just because it's more money does not always mean its better. If he had a high compression motor then yeah, but its just an average 4 banger

it's a joke plus he said this happened after he switched back from 91 to 87 so that could be the cause. even though it doesn't require it doesn't mean that you shouldn't. it's a proven fact that higher octane equal more HP(reason why most people dyno on super/ultra) and around here the high octanes have additives that clean injectors etc.. so it's good to run 91 or better once in a while.
