2006 Camry Steering Problem- Help

Original owner of 2006 LE 4 cyl with 80,000 km.
Just recently encountered the following steering problem. I have not hit any objects or curbs.
When turning the steering wheel 1/4 turn either left or right from center it feels like you loose steering effort, like it skips before effort is again in place. At the same time there is a noticeable clunk that you can hear and actually feel. Only happens a little off centre and not any further or if I turn sharply as in turning the wheel all the way, so likely not a CV joint issue.
Any ideas anyone? Help...safety issue...thanks.

I used to own a 2004 SE V6 - did the exact same thing. Turns out there is a TSB for the repair. Excessive play has developed in the coupler between the steering column and the steering box. It is ST001-06
