5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2002 se 4cyl and Im considering the 140 amp unit from maniac. Has anyone had any issues with these? I've installed high output alts in other cars, but some of them induce a lot of noise. I have a newer alternator off of a 2006 with the 100 amp rating that I haven't installed, but I don't think it will work for my setup. Any input would be appreciated. Here is the alt Im considering. http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/hiou140ampal1.html
Well here is the rundown
-Dynaudio mw180s in the doors
-Dynaudio mw150s and md100s in the kicks
-Dynaudio mw150 and md100 for center channel
-mw180s and md100s in the rear
-4 oz audio 250 subs in the rear deck
-2 alpine pdx 4150s
-1 alpine pdx 2150
-1 alpine pdx 11000
-alpine monitor, surround sound processor, changer, navigation
-a few other things
My only problem is still trying to figure out how to adapt the 4 wire plug of the 100 amp alt to the 3 wire of my 02 80 amp alt. I mocked it up in the engine bay and everything lines right up, the only issue I'm having is the wiring. The upgraded alt from maniac is the 3 wire and plugs right in. This is why I'm leaning towards this.
what do you mean by ''how to adapt the 4 wire plug of the 100 amp alt to the 3 wire of my 02 80 amp alt. I mocked it up in the engine bay and everything lines right up"?
im running a 200amp h/o in my 09 camry. i had it custom built by excessive amperage.
Did the new alternator negatively affect your mileage? Did it introduce any noise into the system. Do you notice any difference in how the vehicle drives? What made you want to upgrade the alternator, were you having problems prior? How many watts are you running?

this is how my stock alternator looks
The alternator that I bought is off of an 05 4cyl and it has 4 wires instead of 3. This is where I am stuck.
So, do you guys have any issues with these high output alts?? I've had trouble with mechanical man and ohio generator stuff in the past. Mainly, some of them induced engine noise and had more of a "winding" sound to them. Do you mind telling us the price paid for these custom units? Maybe by pm if you don't want others to know. Thanks.
I don't know anything about the 4 wires plug from the 05-06 mode, but altetnator winding usually come from a bad grounding.
"Check all your grounds, clean up the connections etc. make sure all of your amp grounds connect at the same point...not the battery (clean batt terms/add/cleanup ground strap connections). Also, make sure your using proper signal cables, shielded...away from sources that could give noise...comps/large wiring harnesses etc.
Also, make sure that your gains are adjusted correctly. Make sure no speaker wires are shorting to ground. Check connections at your headunit."

The winding that is inherent with certain types of high output alts has nothing to do with stereo installation, upgraded grounds, wiring, etc. You can simply hear the alternator sounding like a poor excuse for a supercharger. Some brands are notorious for this. I've had great experience with mechman and old school stinger alts for domestic applications, but not such great results for imports. I've installed dozens of alts, and it's hard to tell what is going to do the trick. I will probably just end up with that maniac alt and give it a shot. The price seems pretty good, so we will see.
Let me tell you, you dont need a HO alt for that setup. I currently run 2 PDX amps 2.150/4.150 and a 3500 watt amp that does about 4000 watts and im running at .5ohm which puts more stress on my alt. BUT i do have a upgraded batt under hood 4 runs of 0gauge and 2 batts in rear and big 3 done. With that I dont drop below 13vs at full tilt on stock alt. With the setup your running you will be fine no need for a HO alt. I plan to get one from DC Power soon but only because Im running 8k + soon. I compete in car audio. Have any questions let me know. Heres some pics of my setup i used to have..
