5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was thinking of cutting the shifter rod on the camry.I like the way the Lexus cars have it.Shorter knob and possibly shorter rod.Even if i get a Lexus shifter knob,i think it will still look tall because of the rod on the camry.Has anyone done it here?I've seen some tutorials on google but most of them do it by cutting it while the rod is still on the car.
So did you cut it at the bottom and retained the threading of the rod or cut it at the top and made new threads for the new knob?
i cut the top(so no threading left) and use a aftermarket knob with use 3 screws on the side to hold it so u wont need anything threads like the old one.
That's cool. But i was thinking of going with the OEM camry shift knob or getting the Lexus one and using it on the camry.Either way i still need to cut it and make new threading on the rod.
i know someone on here found a nut that fits on our thread and cut the shifter down to that. if it was easier to remove the shifter assembly then i would have shortened mine a long time ago. don't want to do it on car because i know it will cause a mess.
The oem knob wont fit again unless you make new threads. I used a saw for mine cuz thats all i had at the time. It just took a very long time. Invest in a dremel cuz you will use it again.
i'm pretty sure a simple nut would not thread the shifter rod, lol.
Just cut it with a dremel or reciprocating saw (carefully), then rethread it with a tap&die set to fit OEM knobs and thread pitches. Or if you just simply cut it, you can use the aftermarket universal ones that comes with inserts and uses screws to hold it on.
