5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The TN staff have been receiving complaints from regular members and newbies alike, and we would like to hear your input regarding how best to resolve this problem. When members use the search feature to find information and the update threads are returned in the results, they find themselves sifting through pages and pages of Off Topic "chat" instead of the pertinent information they need.
Therefore, we would like to invite all our members to take a poll on how to handle this issue. Please respond to the poll honestly, and be a part of the community to help us make TN a better forum.
i think update threads make it harder to search because instead of finding a member's thread about a certain mod, you have to look through 36 pages of crap(other mods and chat)..
that's my opinion, but it doesn't matter much as I'm temporarily getting out of the Camry game...

Even so I'd still ask for you to vote in the poll if you haven't done so already. Every vote in the poll is important to us. Thanks!

personally i think there really is not much in update threads that would really help news though there is some things in there. most update threads like mine, kennys, and gt-rs just have the latest part installed and pics of our cars going through the different stages. nothing that might really help others though it does make searching harder. i say it should be decision of the OP and maybe searching should not include update threads.

though idk if everyone will agree.
I feel if one was to search in update thread, it will be hard. Not everyone updates the first post. Rather, they leave the first post unedited and post new updates by making a new post in the thread and whatever new stuff they did, is lost in the double digit pages.
If people are updating, they should update the original post.
First of all, i think it should be left up to the OP. It's his/her thread after all. Mods should issue a warning to those who have a chat in someone's update thread with the OP not participating (thread jack). But if the OP is part of the chat, than it's up to them as to whether they want to allow it to continue or not.
Updating the first post would be better for the OP, but just like the new update would get lost with the new post, after a couple of pages no one would know that the OP has updated. It would be nice if members could edit their thread tittle and clean up their threads themselves, that way it's easier to know that the first post has been updated.
should be up to the OP.. Update threads are for ppl to post what they have been doing and to chat about it... Most of the important info is on stickys or the master diy list

I updated my first post, but not with the little things though. For example, if you click my sig below, it'll take u to the first page of my update thread with all the latest mods n info about my car.

Thank you for your time and help.
I don't get it... update threads are basically just pictures of what the car looks like with mods on it. Who cares if you have to sift through 36 pages of posts? I'm sorry but without the people actually posting that information in the first place, there would be far less interesting ideas to glean from. People should be grateful, not whine about it. The regulars here like Peach, Lammy, Kenny and Pawel provide a wealth of information, and a forum is for discussion, not a billboard list of providing only most useful information for random people.
If anything, maybe a Mod can start a sticky of mod discussions. For instance, I was looking for someone with a V6 car lowered on Teins. It was impossible to find, until someone posted something random which caught my eye. (This is Drizzt's update thread by the way, he is the only one here that I know of who has a V6 and is lowered on TEins)
A sticky that lists popular mods, and then directs people to those threads, could be easy to update and add information to. Page numbers will solve any problems of discussion you don't want to read.
Say, LED tail light mod - point it to the few threads that detail this or discuss this.
Rear sway bar mod? - point it Njerald's DIY.
What do lowering spring XYZ look like on an I4? Or a V6? - Point it to the right Update thread or spring discussion thread. What do coilovers look like? See Pawel or Kenny's thread etc.
the ability to search within a thread would be nice, but thats a whole other thing i guess.
You can. Theres a button that says "Search this Thread" inbetween "Thread Tools" and "Rate this post" above the first post

I feel theres too many stickies and some have complained about it being cluttered.
I like your idea but if people cant take the time to search or even read the current stickies let alone the first page that clearly answers their question but yet still post a question about it, it would do no good.
Regardless of what admins, mods or users do to help the forum, it will never be perfect. People need to stop complaining and live with it. Its not the end of the world and no matter what TN does, it never going to satisfy everyone. To me, all these things are a moot point.
Too bad theres no option for undecided. I say leave it as is. Off-topic in update threads is not interfering with actual informational threads where its a legitmate question/DIY. If people dont want to read through the 20+ pages of off topic, there are plenty of other threads that has answers that pertains to their question/search.
Also, I feel Chat at discretion of OP (Moderators can delete, edit, or create new threads from chat) and Leave things the way they are! are both the same thing. Currently, OP's Update Thread is at their discretion. If they feel its not wanted, they tell us already to remove/delete/edit. As someone mentioned before, OP are usually the ones that makes it into a chat session and off-topic. Only thing different from what we have in place is the moderators can create new threads from chat (If its off-topic and just chat, why make new threads unless its moved to off-topic/general forum)

Good catch. I didn't catch that earlier. I agreed with you that (from your post) Chat at discretion of OP (Moderators can delete, edit, or create new threads from chat) and Leave things the way they are! are both the same thing.
