5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Last week we struck a deal to buy a 2011 Camry V6 that (supposedly) had been produced and was being shipped to our local dealer.
Today we got the call they had our car. When we looked at it, my wife noticed it has some fine scratches on the hood like a bozo wiped off dust with a dry rag. That should buff out, but she's pissed. We got in for a test drive and noticed the odometer said 38 miles. Definitely not kosher.
So the salesman says our original car is behind schedule in production and probably won't show up for another couple of weeks, so he got this one from another dealership. It got the extra miles from being driven over here.
I don't mind the extra 30 miles, but previous experience indicates that those miles could be from some "beat the snot out of it" jerk. And there's no way to know. If the car starts to have problems soon, the only recourse will be warranty repairs. If it develops trouble many years down the road, that's just tough luck for us. Even abused rental cars usually are ok, but we will probably put well over 100k on the new one before eventually trading it.
We told the salesman, pretty directly, what we thought of the situation; and went home. Told him we'd contact him in a day or two. He says there is no problem with waiting until the correct new car comes in, but I know the 1.9% finance deal expires next week, that's a nice benefit we might miss.
If the dealer offers us something (lower price, service discount, etc) to make us happy, that could be a good deal for us or a bad deal, depending on how the car was treated.
i would definitely hold out for the car you requested to be built, and to see if they can guarantee you the 1.9% financing until the car comes in for trying to pull a fast one on you. key is to get everything down in writing.
First, I also would have been pissed about them trying to pull a fast one. You don't tell someone that "their car" is here (when it's not), then try to pass off a different one. To me, that is bad business.
Second, those scratches should and can be buffed out by the dealer. Those extra miles that someone put on your vehicle will not hurt it. Unless they were doing doughnuts in some parking lot or on the beach (which I doubt), the few extra miles that was added is not enough to do any harm.
My question to you is this:
If you requested a 2011 V6 and they say that your vehicle is behind in production, then what kind of vehicle did they try to pass over on you? Wrong color? Interior? Options?...
I don't buy that your vehicle is behind in production unless you ordered something crazy, like an LE with a sunroof or something like that.
I really hope you get the deal and the exact car you wanted. I don't know if another dealer is an option for your, but you can also try:

The car they got for us was exactly what we had agreed on- 2011 Camry XLE V6, Mag Gray & Ash, Nav, Heated/Leather seats, keyless ign.
In fact, we drove this very same car on a test drive at another dealership last week. It had 3 miles when we started, we put on 3 more. Gently.
I'm suspicious about the "delayed production" story, now suspect the saleman never had one on the way and just made up the story.
This is our local dealership, and the third Camry XLE V6 we have bought from them:
1998: Saleswoman was clueless but gave us a good deal, we are trading that one in at 125k miles.
2005: Salesman was an obnoxious punk, but we got a good price. Still have it at 41k miles.
2011: Salesman seems shady, but is meeting lowest price from any dealership in area.
Do you see a pattern here?
The service department seems to do good work, although they will change you muffler bearings every 10k miles if you let them.
see if they can hold off the deal until they get u the car u desire. if not get some incentives to get the one on the lot. in the end ur going to be driving the car for the next few years and not the jurks at the dealer. when u have something u will like then go for it.

The only thing I can think of them getting the car you want is working out a deal with a another dealership. Say for instance, this other dealership needed a car that they didnt have and your dealership had it and the same goes the other way around. All they would do is swap cars.
As stated, if the car was driven from another dealership, there has to be miles put onto the car and the mileage varies depending on where its coming from.
If its the same exact car that you wanted, I personally say go for it. Have the dealership buff out the scratches and car is under warranty. I highly doubt anyone would do something drastic to the car in 38 miles. Like with any car, its a hit or miss when it comes to problems. You may skip on this car because it has more miles and has minor scratches but the car you wait for might have bigger problems that you wouldnt know.
I was in a similar situation, with worse outcome. I wanted a Sky Blue Pearl, XLE, V6, loaded with leather, push button start, heated seats, Sirius, spoiler, etc, etc [everything except navi], and had to wait more than a month for Toyota to build my car. It was agony. I even went to other dealers in the area, and not one had the one I wanted, how I wanted it. I think the car had about 2 miles at delivery, but I would have taken one with 30 if I had it a month earlier I've had the car for 2.5 years, 50k miles, and it's a dream. I love the sequential manual shift on V6 XLEs - take the car out of D and have fun.. that's what it's all about.
