Gen5 2002 camry se v6. yay! need help.

I have had my 02 camry for about 2 months.

salsa red, 42k, leather,

I am fine with the stock looks for now, recently got trd plate frames, and trd tire valves as a first mod.. haha
but lately, i've been looking, and searching, and i cant seem to find any good information on implementing a sound system into the 5 gen camrys. I'm sure people have their systems upped, but i havent seen any how to forums, or anything. maybe i am not looking in the right place... =\

so I finally decided to be a noob, and as you guys (pros/experts) for any advice, or resources regarding the 5th generation toyota camry for:

1. taking apart the dash
2. removing factory stereo
3. installing subs and amps
4. all the goods that have to do with upgrading the sound system (HU, speakers, etc)

i dont mean to be a noob, but i cant find much useful info.

I was hoping to get subs and and amp, and still deciding whether or not to get an HU..

Anyone have any suggestions for sites, or how tos, or personally know what they;re doing.. i would love to information, and yes I am feening a system.

thank you all. i hope am not in the wrong place.. for my plea for help.

Definitely replace the headunit. Otherwise that will become your weakest link. There is really nothing special to putting a system in the Gen 5 vs any other car. Only problem I ran into was getting my tweeters in the dash and getting my components in the door. I am running a Pioneer AVH-3200BT for my headunit with the HD tuner and sirius tuner. For my speakers I have Memphis Audio MSQ6s that I run bi amped at 150w per side and Memphis M Class 6x9 in the rear deck of HU power. Subs I went with older Memphis M1 12's running off 500w each. Surprisingly I never did put Dynamat Xterme in the trunk because it doesn't make any rattles but I did do the front doors and it helped. There are alot of cheaper alternatives to Dynamat Xtreme though, I use it because I get it at wholesale prices.

The climate controls pry off then you can pull the surround from around the radio everything should be self explanatory from there. If you run amps I ran 2 4ga lines from the rubber boot around the steering column in the engine bay. Grounds are hard in the trunk so I sanded some paint off and ran some self tapping screws through some metal back there.

If your camry has the bone stock system, it will be much easier to replace the speakers vs if you have the JBL system because the JBL system has an external amp(behind glovebox) that must be bypassed and it uses proprietary connections.

Also as far as sites go, Crutchfield is supposed to have a pretty good reputation as they include detailed installation instructions and the tools you need to replace your equipment.

He shouldn't be too concerned about the JBL system considering from what he has listed everything will be gutted anyway. I would definitely run new lines to the doors and new ground from the HU. Not sure if it's common but I had issues with the stock wiring. Crutchfield is a great place for info but I'd definitely purchase from somewhere else. There are SO many brands they don't carry and they're overpriced versus other options.

I guess the real question is how much are you willing to spend to get this done? I have about 3k in my camry and still will probably throw in another 1k before its over with. For me it always starts with a headunit now every car I own I've dumped paycheck after paycheck into it.

I wanna take you guys for taking the time outta your day to give me input on the subject matter.
I been doing a lot of thinking and brainstorming, and I dont think i can dish out all that guap for a fully upgrade, so i was thinking of doing it step my step and upgrade as i go. I was thinking sub and amp first and keep the stock speakers but something keeps telling me that upping the HU will enhance the highs on the stock speakers, vs the line out and keeping the stock head. It'd be awesome if you guys had pictures of your set ups, and such to give me an idea of what you guys have done.

What do you suggest would be a good approach for me, and upgrading over a period of time. amp and sub first? then hu and speakers later? My car audio knowledge base isnt too big, so I am trying to learn from you guys. I appreaciate it alot.

How do you guys think it would be if i got an amp and sub, and just running the stock head? or i was thinking 4 ch amp, and bridge for the sub (most likely one 12'') and connecting the 2 door speakers?

well as you can see im still brainstorming, but any ideas and stuff would be great.

note: i want quality and just a beautiful sounding system, i dont wanna rock the block.. and shatter mirrors. haha. thanks again.

I say, get a new headunit, speakers, sub, and amp.

Running a amp/sub from factory Headunit don't sound that great, unless you get something like a JL cleansweep or somthing.

In my system. I got a 5 channel amp that can run all my speaker and sub but i use it to run only my speaker.

I got a mono amp for just my sub.

I suggest, just get a new headunit, componenet for the front and 6x9 for the rear.
Get a 5 channel for the speaker and add a 300watts amp if you don't want something to loud

JL A6450, infinity mids and high, and a JL 12w3v3 for sub.

I agree.

If money is that big of a concern I'd replace the headunit first then add sub and amp. Make sure you put a HPF on those stock speakers though. I had stock speakers for about a month and they weren't horrible.

How much money do you have to spend on this?

hmm, i agree with you guys on upping the headunit first, as the stock speakers are actually decent. paired to a fairly good HU should make them sound better. And possibly get an amp and sub too all at once. I dont want nothing fancy, just fairly decent stuff that'll get the job done. As of right now i am leaning torward 200-400 dollars for my first phase. @_@.

so what do you guys think, with that budget where its at, any ideas on what i can do?

and whats "HPF" on the stock speakers?.

thank you guys again, for helping me brainstorm.

HPF = High passive filter. Its a filter like a resistor that block out low Frequency. Make your stock speaker sound like it have more voice in them rather then bass.

Headunit around 100-200.
amp- 200
sub- 200

amp kit - 80 dollar. go with 0-2 awg wire, so if you decide to upgrade to a bigger system you won't need to re buy the wire and reinstall it.

you can try to built your first system by buying used stuff and save a bit.

yeah, this sounds reasonable, and i have a good feeling this would work if anything. I have one question though, on some head units, dont they have a built in high pass filter? what's your take on that? would it make a difference? or would it just be better to get the external ones?

but so far I have mapped out, possibly a new head unit, and i;m sure i can find used amp and sub from someone. Thank you.

yes, most headunit have hpf but bass still enter the stock speaker. Most aftermarket speaker have a extra hpf on them. You can use the stock speaker and if you don't like them then you can buy new one.

okay, thanks bro, i will definitely take that into consideration. one thing i do wanna clear up though, is if there is a stock amp at all in my camry somewhere that i am not aware of? my factory stereo is the
toyota JBL AD6807, if that helps. I been searching but either im not looking in the right place, but since you guys have replaced the stereo maybe you'd have an idea about it. anyone else have any input about upping the sound system, please be sure to share your ideas. thanks.
