5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 2006 LE V6 Camry has an issue when I press on the pedal, it can take up to 1.5 seconds to actually start moving faster. It makes a loud noise, then moves. It's terrible because I cannot rely on my V6 to get me out into traffic at a moments notice.
Is this normal or something Toyota can fix? My previous 1998 LE V6 did not have this issue. It had great pickup.
So, you are sitting still, you give the engine gas and it revs as if in neutral. After a few moments there is a thunk as the transmission engages into gear and it begins to move? If this is the scenario then yes, you have a transmission problem. When is the last time the fluid was changed? How many miles on the car? Sounds like a valve is sticking and might be cured by fresh fluid, but you are most likely getting ready to spend some money.

Something is gummed up. A solenoid is sticking or a valve is leaking or not moving because it is dirty. Start by dumping out as much fluid as you can and then refill and hope it improves. It might. In the mean time, start shopping your neighbors for a recommendation for a good transmission shop to rebuild the thing.

He is not describing dbw delay. If he is sitting at a signal, it turns green, he accelerates, the engine revs and he sits for 1.5 seconds before the transmission clunks into gear, that is nowhere this side of normal.

I take that back. Its not when I am standing still, but already moving. However, it still is not as "quick" a pickup as my old 1998 Camry. It's more noticeable when I'm already moving.
Is there a delay in acceleration? You press the accelerator and the engine does not respond, or are you saying the engine is effectively coming out of gear, revs, and then the transmission catches??

Just a delay in acceleration. It doesn't feel like a problem - more the way it was designed. Sorry, not a car guy normally, so forgive the vague descriptions.
All I know is I haven't seen the slowness to react in any other car I've driven, except some very wimpy 4 cylinders from 20 years ago that just made a loud noise when you pressed on the pedal.
I had a same issue with '07 Camry SE V6. After the accerlator gas pedal was fixed and my ecu was reprogammed. The camry is no longer the same I had before
The 1998 v6 has the Aisin A541 series transmission. They are actually decent but a bit dirty. It's the new U-series junk they introduced (like the Aisin U-151 series you have in the V6) IMO are just clunkers.
Have you ever replaced the fluid and filter in the transmission? I think the U151 still uses the T-IV ATF, which is just re-labeled dino Mobil 3309. I'd use Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF (synthetic blend, ~$4.5 street). It's a superior fluid if not going the cost of fully synthetic like Mobil-1.
Make sure you get a new filter/gasket kit, like the $13.20+shipping on rockauto (use the 5% TN member discount):
