ABS code help

Hi all,

On the way home today my 02 Camry displayed the "ABS" light.

I've worked out how to short the ODB2 plug to read the ABS code and the result was "21".

A search seems to suggest that is the right front wiring but can anyone confirm that is the correct error for my year Camry?

I also got an engine light code but that was harder to interpret, are the codes available from somewhere?

Thanks

Great! That looks spot on.

Silly question..but I assume the left and right side of the car is as looking from the perspective of the driver?

Thanks

Correct.

Seems I didn't read the fault properly when I checked the front right wheel sensor and wiring

code 21 refers to the FR solenoid circuit in the "ABS control relay".

Anyone tell me where this is located?

Thanks

That's part of the ABS hydraulic module. When you get something like this it usually means something costly. For example, requiring the replacement of the entire ABS hydraulic module.

The solenoid activates to relieve brake pressure into the secondary circuit during operation.

However, the autoshop101s are old docs. I'm not sure if the newer ABS control modules used in Toyotas still use the same codes. For example, if it's a copy of the Teves or Bosch version 7 or 8 then it's quite a different setup. You'll get start-up assist (green light on a steep incline), electronic brake proportioning, acceleration slip control, emergency brake boost pre-charge, etc etc etc.

So again, I'm not sure if the codes are absolutely "backward" compatible.

I'd try removing and reinstalling the electrical connectors first. Maybe clean them with alcohol and allow to dry.

When I turned the key with front speed sensors disconnected, I got errors 35,36 which ties up to that document so I think it is correct.

I have tried the connector cleaning; the light doesn't always come on now I have the wiring diagram, I can see what else I can find before having to take it to someone.

Thanks

Just an update, the wiring diagram does not seem to match completely with my car.

All I can think is that Camrys must differ by region as my Australian Camry does not match to either of the two ABS diagrams listed.

My state library has the Toyota repair manual so when I get a chance I'll check it out and update the forum.

Final update and useful for anyone with a Bosch ABS module.

My wiring is fine.

There are well known problems with dry joints in the ecu part of the ABS actuator. Search for Bosch 5.3 repair to learn more.

The circuit is tiny with lots of gold wires the thickness of hair everywhere and the larger pins are a metal that does not solder easily.

I attempted the repair due to finances but there are people who can repair for around $200US or so.

HTH someone.
