Steering Too sensitive?

I've just bought a 2007 camry, never had a toyota before and am noticing that steering turns on it's own sometimes when I go over certain surfaces on the road. Is this common or could I have some steering problems?

Like the other day, there was this section on the road in the left turning lane, when I approached it the wheels started turning right on their own (when I wasnt holding it tightly), I started backing up and then it started backing into left...

ANy ideas?

Well the wheels are going to turn in the contours or bumps of the road. Not sure what you're trying to fix.

Sensitive in the wrong way? The steering wheel is sensitive, the car is not as reactive as say a.. Miata.

I noticed that my Cam's steering wheel will move a little, while the car barely corrects. This is helpful when I navigate crappy road surfaces at high speeds... this is unlike the more sensitive Euro steering, where the car really turns with each correction of the wheel.

That's LE suspension for you...

Switch to something stiff and the steering and handling changes drastically.

Yes, your steering wheels is physically connected to wheels, so if your wheels want to go in a different direction, your steering wheel will to.

Well MJZ I nderstand that much, I'm not retarded. what I want to know is if this is common on camrys. It seems a slight changes in road shape affect the steering greatly and on my old volkswagen and mazda it didnt do that. So what I want to know is: Is it common for camrys to have such sensitive steering?

You'd be surprised at what kind of questions get tossed around ... so no offense

Common? Every Camry will exhibit this.

What your are experiancing is called "bump steer" and yes the gen6 camery has more bunp steer then other cars. I noticed it pretty quickly after I got mine. I have wide tires and a SE so mine is more pronounced. Now I'm used to it.

if you are coming from driving a VW and a Mazda then that probably explains it. Both VW and Mazda make great handling cars. They give you that firm, planted to the road kind of driving feel. Camry's have precise but very light steering with no weight or balance to it whatsoever. Its made for easy commuting and relaxed old man style driving. The crappy steering and traction on the camry is one of my biggest complaints about the camry actually, something I whine & bitch about quite frequently and with good reason. But to answer your question, yes it's normal and you'll get used to it.
