The stake in the nut helps to keep it in place. The older cotter pin was a better way, but more expensive to assembly at the factory. Time is money for the manufacturers. If you see the link below, it's no stranger to other manufacturers.
Things will be easier if you use a HubTamer like:

You'll have to remove the hub yourself. Which in many cases isn't hard with a wooden dowel of the correct size and a good "persuasion" from the engine side out.

The nut looks to be crimped or a punch was used to dent the lip to hold it on the spindle. My question is how do I get it off? Might it be as easy as taking a punch or even a nail to take the dent out?
Why does Toyota have to make it so damn hard? Not only did I have to find a 12point 32mm socket, but now I've got to find a way to get the old nut off!! What ever happened to the standard 6 pt nut with a cover and cotter pin?
BTW, for those that have done a bearing replacement, is there anything else I need to be aware of?
