K&N SRI w/ or w/o lower stock filter?

Just installed the K&N for fun. Looks good. But I am curious - if you have installed this intake on your V6 did you keep the lower stock airfilter or did you removed it? It's just hanging there now for no particular reason.

from what i can remember, the metal "separator" or Heat shield or whatever it is called has a hole cut out of the bottom so the lower intake can fit there. if thats what u mean.

Yes, correct - but it does not serve a purpose anymore.

well, remember, the lower is taped off the same inlet as the stock upper. After removing the stock airfilter box both go into open air just pointing toward the K&N...but it's wide open and not sealed to any enclosure anymore. Air will take the path of least resistance ...and w/ the tubing just and going into open air there will go nothing through the restricted flow of the lower stock filter. Why would it.

good point, im going to have to take a look at this tomorrow, I wonder if there could be a way to fabricate something to better channel the air directly into that opening...hmmm

I kept the "ramair" scoop for more air to the filter, and i kept the lower part as well...you could get more piping for the lower and direct it to the filter...if you do it with the "ramair" scoop too because for water.

i thought i had a pic of mine but i don't... if what i said is confussing i'll get a pic tomorrow and post it..

Thanks Punk, but I am actually not thinking of adding anything - wouldn't it be silly to install an open K&N intake and then try to add piping anywhere...the K$N filter sucks the air from the open surround and the stock ram inlet is not really a ram inlet anymore....I just wanted to remove the lower filter as it's sounds silly to have a filter hanging there for no use. I was surprised that the K&N instructions did not advice to remove it in the first place. at least, these way you can revert to stock easily - maybe that was their thinking.

fujita requires u to remove that. btw sorry for the jack but can someone tap a pic of those small thin vacuum hoses who has k&n. fujita instructions suck when it comes to that.

with fujita though u get air from bottom. i would keep it b/c like others said it directs the air in. really no other way for air to get in there when hood is closed.

Not necessarily silly! K&N may not have a cold-air setup that has piping going to the lower parts of the car. Your setup is good for some more hp/tq however I noticed that that lowend torque and throttle response increased with the extended/cold-air piping setup.

Mind you, I am driving a RAV4 V6 but we have the same engine. I recently tested out a filter on the maf sensor setup like you have vs a 3" cold-air piping to the bumper vs a 3.5" cold-air piping to the ground. The best combination was the 3" cold-air piping from the maf sensor to the bumper, with the filter mounted down in the bumper area. I'm talking from performance perspective, not about hydrolocking from water, etc.

I was not able to get hard 60ft, 1/4 mile data since it rained when I switched the cold air piping to 3.5". What I did notice is that the filter mounted on the maf sensor pipe and the 3.5" cold-air piping felt the same. It felt like more power than stock but throttle response was slower and there was a feeling of loss of lowend torque. I ended up switching back to my 3" cold-air piping to the bumper and now I am a happy camper.

Here's a pic of when I switched the cold-air piping to 3.5".

Here's a picture of the 'ricer' cold-air setup. I broke the foglight bulb when making the changes so I just took the fog light out. Figured I may as well just remove the foglight.....for now.

The more air going to the intake the better. I'm not saying cover the filter with piping...just had it aimed toward the filter for better air flow.

I have all the resonators lower and upper gone, just left the piping for the airflow.

Thanks all for the responses - did not expect that any change with additional piping makes a difference as the engine bay is open to the ground and thought it could suck plenty of air from there. Interesting.

oh, btw - I don't hear much change in sound nor any real difference in driving.

I purchase all of my piping, silicone hoses/fittings and air filters from Verocious Motorsports. http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/ That is not to say that you should do the same thing but they are only 5 minutes from my house. All my cars have piping from them. I simply drive to their warehouse, disassemble the stock intake and get to making a custom intake.......going back and forth to get the pieces needed. Plus, they have a dyno too so I can test what I put together. There are probably many cheaper places online though. TVerocious parts aren't exactly cheap, just convenient for me.
