Check Engine light on my 02 Camry V6

It appears that my check engine light goes on and off on my 02 Camry V6 with 180K on it. My Dad said he filled some gas and it happened afterwords. The dealer checked the gas cap and said if it drives fine it may be a loose cap, and it would cost $100 to diagnose.

I guess I have 2 questions:

- Can a loose gas cap cause the light to go on and off?
- How much does an OBD II scanner go for?

I figure if the cost of the scanner is under the cost to check, it may be worth it (There was one for $60 I think at Crappy Tire not too long ago).

I will take the car for a spin tomorrow to see if I detect anything and if the light goes off after taking a nice long drive.

Any thoughts?

Many parts stores, such as Autozone can read the codes for FREE.

Or, get one of these, $49.99 on sale:

Then post the code(s) here.

Are there any places in Toronto that read this stuff for free?

Oops sorry, didnt' see you're in Canada.

Not sure if places like Canadian Tyre does that. I'd check your local parts stores or search for OBD-II/CAN reader (you need the CAN version).

I haven't yet got my hands on a definitive DTC list for the 02 camry yet you can try shorting the two pins on the DLC connector under the driver side dash and count the "check engine" lights. The ABS light also flashes codes relating to the abs circuit.

use a paperclip or such to short the pins, turn the car to "on" (don't start) and count the lights.

These are the codes I've found. No way to be sure if they are right but you have nothing to lose by trying.
