5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've got a 2007 Camry V6. Late last summer the brakes got noisy at around 40k miles. Some squealing, lots of other noise.
I cleaned 'em several times, greased 'em, etc. I could never get them to quiet down. The pads were not very worn. I finally gave in and got replacement pads. That fixed it.
Now it's less than a year and about 13k miles later. Brakes are getting noisy again. HOWEVER, I'm also sometimes getting vibration in the front end during braking. It doesn't happen around town, just on the expressway. It doesn't seem to happen unless I'm above 40mph, though if it starts above 40 mph it will continue as a drop below that speed. It often doesn't happen as soon as I hit the brakes, but it does seem to happen more if I'm having to use the brakes a lot. You feel the front end vibrate up through the steering wheel.
I'm trying to gather info before going out and replacing the discs and pads. I assume it could possibly be a warped rotor or pad.
are brake problems common on Camrys? The first 40k miles were fine, but now I seem to be fighting this issue off and on all the time.
The front rotors always warp on the Gen6 Camry. I had my first set re-surfaced twice and then I did a whole brake job. So far my second set has been re-surfaced once but the vibration is returning so probably by the end of the summer I'll have to do another full brake job.

My brakes are quiet, not dusty and the original front pads are still there at 50,000 miles. Changed the rears at 46,000 and they still had 15,000-20,000 miles left on them.
My rotors have not warped and stop smooth but I always torque my wheel nuts when I change/rotate tires 2x/year.
i just had my 09 camry front brakes replaced and rotors resurfaced under warranty. they said to come in before 36k so i can get my back ones done too. i have 29k on it now.

Well you're an exception on this forum for many reasons.
Rotor warping is a very common issue with the Gen6. A search will bring out a handful of other people with the same issue.
I think I read somewhere Toyota has since issued new part numbers but people with 2007 and 2008 (and possibly some 2009) cars tend to experience rotor warp sooner or later.
I've also had break squeaking a few times but it went away on its own.

I never had any problems when i had original pads, but when i switched to centric pads they squeaked like crazy. Now im on akebono so far no problems quiet and no dust. Ive heard they had tsb about squeaking brakes im sure if you haven't already do a search there's tons of stuff about brakes it seems pretty common.
I don't know if it's common or not problem, but I replaced rotors too,I got NAPA premium rotors and wagner ceramic pads on front.rear all stock.about 12k on them-so far so good.

Good to hear you like the Napa. My plan for the rotor would be either Napa premium or Raybestos (sp?). For the pads, I'd probably just get Napa ceramics.
Toyota rotors have been having problems since 2002 Gen 5. They were replacing them free. There was a TSB for it.
I'm not sure if the brake system was under-designed or they were using cheap rotors and pads.
If you replace them I'd get Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors and Akebono ProAct ceramic pads. No Toyota rotors/pads. Check rockauto.com for prices.

This man knows what hes talking about lol. Akebonos are awesome and I'm probably getting raybestos rotors next brake change.
I had 35xxx miles on my 2007 xle v6 and went back to the dealer and they wouldnot do anything about it saying they did not cover "wear items" such as this. Does any one know if this is true, I thought 36000 mile coverage should do. With the 3 recalls and now warped rotors I don't think they should count on anymore business from me. I expected too much I guess.
