5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I searched the Camry forum for 'uncomfortable headrests' and only found an old thread (3 1/2 yrs old) so didn't think posting there would be appropriate. I did post in the Tacoma forum, but no one responded. Thought I'd start a new thread here.
The front seat headrests in my 09 Camry drive me crazy! I don't lean my head back, but just with my shoulders back in a comfortable position, the back of my head rubs against the headrest. On a long trip it gets uncomfortable pretty fast. I understand that this change is due to a law change regarding headrest protection and preventing whiplash. It only needs to be an inch further back and I'd be a happy camper . The only way around this is to recline the seat back some - but I'd rather sit more upright. My wife's car is an '05 Camry and the headrests are a bit smaller. The angle of the rods look to be the same as the '09 when matched side by side. What is different in these two is that there is at least 1" more material or stuffing in the front portion of the headrests on the Gen6 causing the headrest to protrude closer to the driver.
I read in an old thread (dated 06)... 07' Camry headrest driving me nuts
where 'chitty' bent the rods of his headrest some so they would no longer hit the back of his head. Does anyone know how to bend the rods without damaging the headrest itself?
Have you considered neck pads? I bought a set of Junction Produce neck pads for that purpose alone. They're quite stiff but once you break them in they are quite comfortable. Of course, if you want a softer set, the Bellezza set is much softer but doesn't have the labeling

I just wish those dam headrests didnt touch the back of my head at all. I have waxed hair so I'm really careful about my hair.. I tried leaning the seat back up to the point where it doesnt touch but then my posture gets all screwed up.
All vehicles are getting the lousy forward tilted headrests. I cannot possibly see how they can be safer when ones head stops at the headrest but the body keeps going backwards until the back & shoulders contact the seat. Death from brain stem injury is all I see from this improvement.
I have them on my 2009 Dodge Ram and despise them, but unbelievably I'm the only one complaining. I've thot about a neck pillow, but I've also been searching junkyards for some decent condition headrests from prior Rams that will drop right in. Problem is junkyards won't give them up unless I purhcase the entire seat. I'd suggest taking measurements and going to a junkyard looking for older model Toy's that have the better headrests, or roll them them with your wife's Camry to see if they'll fit, so you'll know what to look for.

Yep, they do fit . And... they're the same color gray - but a different shade of gray. She being a woman I'm sure she'd notice the color difference AND more concerned with her hair getting messed up as she sits more upright than I do when driving. Yeah I don't think I could swap them and get away with it.
My aunt made these. They live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and they drive up to NY 2-4 times a year. My uncle LOVES to drive and the pillows are damn comfy for that long road trip. Everyone who has sat in my car has commented and loved them. I think some have even sat in my car at a couple of car meets and commented on them as well. In all honesty, it feels weird sitting in a car without a pillow as there is a naked void there.
Here are pics of the headrest/neckrest
Unfortunately, as per forum rules, no talk of sales for these pillows. If you have questions or need information, PM me. Lammydi and wife; MrSo0ho0 ('04 Camry) and girlfriend ('10 Corolla SE) and Mr Jones ('08 Matrix) can vouch. We've had people come back to us to purchase as gift for friends/family.
I dont see many pillows and if I do, it has these funky characters like Hello Kitty, dogs bones or what not and are flimsy and soft. Than you have the ones like Recaro, TRD but its rectangular and I dont know if its stiff or not. But even those are just knock-offs with stitching of logo.
If we had a machine that can stitch ToyotaNation logo or wording on it, I would do it in a heartbeat. I think iron-on logos would rub off eventually.
Thanks for the suggestion of neck pillows. I may try that. From the picture with leather seats, it looks like you're able to tilt the seat back some and not feel so "laid-back" with the addition of neck pillows.

I tilt my seat back pretty far. Without the pillow, the seat would be not as leaned back but with the pillow, my lower neck (shoulder area) touches the pillow. My head never touches the headrest. Even if I do lean back and rest my head, the middle of my head (back of skull) touches top of pillow.
The pillow can be lower as shown in my pictures or you can flip it around so that its higher up. I think MrSo0ho0 has it higher since hes a taller guy.
This animated gif is the only image I have of a head against pillow

Why dont we just turn the headrests around? haha
LOL. edited original post.
As for turning it around, arent there grooves on the poles so that it locks the headrest in place? If you turn it around, it wont stay up. Plus, it would look weird.

yeah.. those pillows should do the trick for the OP. Just dont fall asleep because its so comfortable.. lol
I bought an 09 SE and loved the seats, HATED the headrests.
I tried to find some TRD neck rests with no luck.
I turned the headrests backwards and it helped keeping my neck from bending forward when leaning back, but there was no support and I just didn't like it. It also looked a little stupid, especially if you have passengers in the back seat.
As cheap as I am, I finally contacted dcemureviews and purchased a pair of the KushNecks. Raise the headrest a click or two and now the seats are PERFECT. These and the window tint were absolute necessities for me in this car.
Dcemureviews was great to deal with and I can't thank him and his aunt(?) enough.
