5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This HAS to have been discussed before, but I can't find it using the search. And Googling only comes up with the fact that the SE has 10 more horsepower than the LE, not why.
Is it exhaust? Intake? Engine software? All of the above? SE 4-cyl comes in at 179 hp vs. 169 hp for the other versions.
If this has been discussed, I'd appreciate a link to the thread. Thank you.
I doubt its the intake as that thing looks restrictive as anything I've ever seen. I can't see it being the exhaust as the dual exhaust on the SE isn't really functional from what I can tell. I assumed it was either software programming, or IDK what. I just chalk it up to the SE being sportier so they gave it a little more power than the others. Same difference between like an Altima 3.5 V6 having less power than a Maxima because the Max is supposed to be better, or the Acura TL has a bit more power than a Accord V6 with the same engine.
^ I did "race" LE V6 and it was faster than my SE, maybe because it had a electronic steering instead of a hydraulic? and the fact that an SE is 20Kg heavier than LE.

I heard it was how the ECU was tuned. But if you put a SE and an LE side by side and race the +10 Hp on the SE wont be noticable at all.
^ this is most likely it. You can actually get some big HP gains by playing with the ECU. For example the 2.0T engine on VW Passats and Audi A4's comes with 200hp out of the factory. People are able to squeeze close to 260hp out of that engine, sometimes even more by getting it chipped. Car companies seem to think that advertising good mpg will sell more cars than advertising power so you seldom get cars that are tuned to their full potential for power.

Thats true. For some reason i seem to think that our engines with an appropriate ECU tune (though i know toyota ECUs are hard to crack) can pull out big HP gains

LE V6, like mine, does not have electronic nannies. I wouldn't be surprised that my car is faster than an SE V6 with ESC and TC.

what do you mean by electronic steering and hydraulic? I didn't know the SE and LE have different steering.

The SE also has heavier 17" wheels; more rotating mass. Not a big difference, but a difference nonetheless.
