Gen5 Genuine gaskets vs aftermarket

I dropped my transmission pan yesterday to drain oil and replace gasket. When I took off Toyota OEM gasket it had indentation going all around the gasket because pan had line sticking out so they fit perfectly.

The problem is that all aftermarket gaskets I looked at do not have this indentation. They are all flat. Do you guys think pan will now leak because the gasket does not fit as tightly? I will try to upload pic in few minutes.

Also, has anyone changed valve cover gasket? Does it have indentation too?

I believe autozone has felpro gaskets for the tranny.

The gasket should fit tightly. Any leak, whether its an exhaust gas leak from a gasket to a misfitting gasket on the tranny is bad news..

Ok if you look at this OEM gasket you can see indentation in the gasket. On all aftermarket gaskets there is no such indentation and they are absolutely flat.

Can't really tell from the picture if it's just the imprint (depressed) by the raised part of the pan. (There are gaskets with raised bead all around). I think that's what it is an imprint from the pan, so when you take off the aftermarket gasket you should see the same.

I'd get a Fram ATF kit. They typically come with cork-rubber gaskets (a composite gasket). Did you change out the felt filter that can plug up over time?

What type of ATF are you using, Toyota's dino Mobil-3309, relabeled as T-IV? Or a synthetic blend like the Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF suitable for D-III and T-IV?

John you were right. Apparently that is imprint that pan leaves on the gasket. It made me think that Toyota made this imprints so people would buy their gaskets. How I found out is that I actually went to dealership to buy Genuine gasket. When he handed it to me I saw that it did not have imprint. So he told me that every gasket toyota makes does not come with imprint and totally flat.

I am using Castrol Import ATF. So far I had wasted about 8 quarts on disassembling pan twice. Good thing that fluid cost me only $2/quart.

I think i'd have waited to see if it leaked before unbolting all those bolts again...but better safe then sorry i suppose.
It's not likely toyota makes their own gaskets in-house anyway. And there's no guaranty that the ones they buy from their suppliers are any better then the kind you buy from the auto parts. (Some parts Napa makes seem BETTER then oem anyway).

Some ATF gaskets, for some cars specify, either on a note in the box, or on the box itself, to use no sealer. If your ATF gasket says nothing about this, i would use sealer (permatex brown is my usual).

The one thing i would NOT do is to ever replace a factory silicone-sealed pan, with another bead of silicone sealer! That is a cost measure, ONLY, and far inferior to a gasket (and sealer if needed).
