5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello all, my car was a little below 1/4 tank. The gas light came on which is not unusual. Then the light went out but there was a weird smell. Has anyone else experienced this?
I wouldn't think the gas light should be coming on if you're still around 1/4 tank. Mine usually doesn't come on until the needle is right at "E" and that usually means the tank still has ~1.5 gallons or about 30 miles of range.
Were you on a steep hill or anything? That can cause the fuel gauge to be off sometimes, I don't know what to say about the smell though..

the gas light will sometimes come on after a long drive at around 1/4 of a tank, due to the vapors and pressure in the tank the indicator stays a float a little higher then usual . now after a long drive , park the vehicle on a level spot and mark down your gas gauge if it reads 1/4, after about 20 mins of cool down jump back in and read your gas gauge, its should not read the same but less then where you marked it.
was the temp. out side higer then 80degs. this can be a good thought on your gas gauge reading incorrect. Most newer vehicle have a pressure vent selenoid to control this from happening, its deals with your evap system, another question is the engine light on?
every vehicle has diffrent symptoms, as to how they are treated ,where in the globe they are located. you also have the quality of gas you use, as to down south of usa, near the border, youll have some gas with high percentage of ethenal and alc, up north high percentage of water(yes water) moisture from the tanks.middle east sand, lol yeah air thin sand clogges injectors and filters fast.
studies show, that a good 80* of gas is affected be the enviorment.
your gas tank can have rust build up with out your knowing.most dealers ask for customers to perform a fuel system and air induction system cleaning.
Oh for those out there, i use the plus gas, still same locating same storeing spot, same percentage of exposure to the element.duepoint buds

I know that the gen 6's gas warning light is a little too early, but it's good so u won't be running on fumes.
With an I4, you could prolly hit 600 miles easily... I think the furthest I went without refueling was around 530 miles or so. I put in about 15 gallons so I still had another 3 gal or so remaining. I think the gas light came on around 480 or 490 miles.
500-600 highway right? cause in the city I'm lucky if I can get more than 300.
Yes...I think if I planned my route a bit better, I could have got better economy. I started my NorCal to SoCal trip such that when I arrived at I-5S to I-10E, it was right around 5:30 pm on a Wednesday...yuck...and I still had some 150 miles to go eastward on I-10. I don't think I used anything higher than 3rd gear until i got to about San Bernardino.
