Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Picked up a '11 Camry and noticed a sticky black substance on the front alloys at the lug area.No doubt it's brake dust but what is the sticky residue and why is it only in the lug area?.
I'm having remote start installed and even my '10 SE loaner has the same crap in the lug area.
I had an '07 Camry and of course it had brake dust but never had the sticky lug area problem.Never had than on any vehicle.
Just wash it with simple green and a sponge. Sounds like they maybe put something on the lug to prevent corrosion?

The least important thing to worry about I've heard of in 4+ years on this forum................
Well, I'm not sure I fully agree with this statement. A couple of years ago a guy posted a note here saying that he had just taken delivery of a new Camry and found a fingerprint smudge on the inside of the windshield. He wanted to know if he should take it back and get a different car........

^I don't blame him... I would have returned it right away. There would have been hell to pay if there was a strand of hair on the seat...
If that's the worst issue, sign me up.

I must have missed that clown or immediately removed it from my memory..

My '11 is in service for a remote start and cracked speedometer lens.
Drove home from the dealer at night and heard some creaking at the dash in right in front of me.Creaking stopped and the next morning found two cracks in the lens right at the center top.One crack 2" and another 1".
On the wheel center hub problem..
When I was cleaning some brake dust on the alloys the next day,I found the center hub lug area was sticky.I waxed off the residue.I found it odd that the area on both front wheels was sticky.I never saw that before.
Now with the '10 SE loaner,it has the same problem but of course brake dust is now covered the lug area.Barely any on the usual places brake dust collects.
The loaner has 4K miles on it.
In an effort to summarize, young people are very 'micro' in their thinking with respect to nearly everything. Call it narcissism. As they grow older and mature they become more 'macro' in their thinking, hence, when a young man buys his first brand new car he can see flaws that someone older would clearly overlook. The first door ding could result in actual tears. So, any guy under the age of 25 should probably be given a free pass when they post a serious note here complaining about some sort of gooey stuff on a lug nut. The rest of us know that he will eventually grow out of this stage. If he's much older than that though, well, it's time to grow up.

Bite me!
Now that's immature.
I guess owning my RX you know chances are that I'm older than 25 and you would be correct.
Just asked a question because I've bought many vehicles and have never seen the issue before and the loaner has the same issue.
Just curious if anyone else had the same experience.
BTW,door dings do bother me too.
Gee, sorry you are offended. I have no knowledge of how many cars you have owned, but nonetheless, what I offered was well researched and factual. Now that I think about it, it might apply to you more than you realize. Thanks for making my point. Now, clean up the goo and get after other matters, please.

Hey Joe, try to clean it off right away. My 2010 had the same stuff around the lugs when I bought it back in July. I thought it would come during my first car wash. By then (two weeks later) the stuff had dried; to this day I'm working on getting it off...millimeter by millimeter.

Thanks for the reply,asn13oy.The stuff is nasty.
Didn't come off with a simple wash.I had to cleaner wax it off but it's gone and probably a lug corrosion preventer like mentioned above.I hope it's gone for good.
Hope you get the stuff soon.
Is there any chance that what you are describing is cosmoline, and that they are Japanese built cars?
Could be but i thought that was applied when cars were shipped across the ocean. The Camry is made here.
Another wierd thing was in was only inthe front center hug lug area.
