5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
5th Gen (2002) Camry V6 XLE tach, speedo, odometer, engine temp, and fuel guage dead. Gauge 1 and Guage 2 fuses OK. No obvious connector or wiring problem. Resets on battery disconnect/reconnect, but only lasts a short time (minutes). Is there anything left to check before cluster replacement?
is this a car you bought used, and if so, did it come with another sound system other than the factory? there is a possibility the ground wire behind the dash is either disconnected or loose. also, how good is the battery? have you had that tested? also look for ground wires under the hood. has the dash ever been removed for a/c repairs, like the installation of the evaporator? has the dash ever been removed to replace a bad gauge or other type of repair? i think there is a ribbon connection behind the dash, at least i remember those on older american cars. you want to really crawl under the dash, and hood again, and really dig deep. you can do a battery leakage test, by making sure the battery is fully charged, then connect a voltmeter across both the negative and positive and watch for voltage dropping, indicating a draw, then one by one, pull out a fuse and see when the voltage drop stops. you'll find the problem that way.
Bought it new w/ JBL 6 disk changer (it's got CD's jammed in it if that's of any significance). Sorry, forgot to mention battery tested good. Had the cabin air filter changed, but wouldn't think that involved dash removal. Otherwise, no. Thanks for the tips.
You could try to find and follow any diagnostic steps in the Service Manual but maybe that is too easy.....
Thanks for the tip. If I had a service manual, I probably would not be here (but maybe that is too obvious). I don't and I am so any tips you can offer would be appreciated.

i have to ask for forgiveness if i seem not all knowing, but there might be an "age difference" between you and i, so much so, i don't think i understand when you say you have "cd's jammed in the cd player"........does this mean they are actually jammed in there, or does that mean its fully loaded...??
anyways, there "could be" a problem there if some how its causing an electrical overload, and the cluster is on the same line as the cd player.
now, what i have done is a quick search for you, and it appears that for as little as $10, you can download a factory manual.
The 04 CD,radio et.al. is capable of running its own diagnostics. I believe you can find this in on line sources. A disc got stuck in my CD player,I ran the diagnostics, called the dealer with the code and had a new one installed in less that a week.[car was still under warranty]
