5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have 06, Camry, XLE, 4 Cly, US made. I am shopping for semi-metallic front brake pads. I am searching on websites like rockauto, autoparts warehouse etc and I do not find much choices (none for semi-metallic) there for XLE. I do see lots of choices for Camry SE.

Ceramic pads will be more money but they last longer, create virtually no dust, stop better and when hot, provide much better braking with little fade. Ceramics are standard equipment on newer models and may have been on your car as well. I really don't see anything here to discuss. If the price is the issue, then buy the really cheap 19 dollar pads. Brake pads are one of the items you can actually buy at the dealer for less than the parts store if you check around.

I am going for semi-metallic because I believe they stop car faster then ceramic. At present my car takes lot of push to stop.
Paid $40 (including SH) for BECK/ARNLEY.

I will disagree, I paid $20 for a set of Monroe ceramic front pads for my 2005. Wagner recently had (or may still have) a rebate on their thermoquiet line of ceramic pads that will also bring the price down around $20
About all I can get at the dealer for $20 is one quart of trans fluid Dealer prices suck
Be careful with which pads you order for the gen 5.5
I have a 4 cyl SE and I ordered pads for a SE and they were too big, I had to return them and order pads for an LE to fit in my SE, makes no sense. I tried to point this out to Monroe and they argued with me that the pads I installed should not have fit an SE
I took pictures of both model pads and pictures of the SE badge on the back of my car, they still thought I had faked something just to play a trick on them. Search for my threads here on brakes, you will see the part numbers I listed.

That's quite a deal! The cheapest pads I can get here are at O'
Reilly's. They are organic pads for $34. Wagner Thermoquiet ceramic are $67, and I found some Akebonos on-line for $60 plus shipping. Monroes were $55 plus shipping. My dealer will sell a set of Akebono pads for $38 plus tax. Hence my comment that I can get pads at the dealer for less money than the parts store.

Current price is $31.37 with free shipping The model # is CX908 (the ones that did NOT fit were the CX906A)
I had a $20 mail in rebate at the time of purchase, so my mistake, I paid less than $20 for them
My local shops are a little better than the dealer, but online is the way to go if you can wait on the shipping. I regularly check over my car, so i know in enough time to order pads.
BTW - after several thousand miles, I can say these pads are quiet and stop as good if not better than the OEM Toyota pads. There IS a little more dust, but that doesn't bother me.
Kenny,
I am just gleeful that you were able to get a great deal on pads for your 05 SE. I own an 07 LE and in my case I am unable to find Akebono pads anywhere, over the counter or mail order, for less than I can buy them from the dealer at the internet price. Drive safely.

gdanaher - I am gleeful too I never thought I could buy pads for a modern car for so little money
I am just posting my story saying that if you watch for the rebates that are good for any model car, you too might be able to snag a pair of cheap pads for your model.
A $15-$20 rebate on a $60 set of pads is worth it IMO (random luck I get that on a $35 set of pads). I even bought the pads about 6 months early because I saw the deal posted on fatwallet (worth browsing over daily if you don't now)
between amazon and rock auto, there are some good deals to be had if you have the time to look for them and stack a rebate. Fortunately I have a few extra minutes (like may 2 minutes ) to surf for deals at work
I have also found some good synthetic oil for $1.50 / quart watching and stacking deals

Kenny,
I ordered EBC Semi-metallic Brake pads (part # UD908) over the web. I received ceramic one. On seller's website said its metallic while manufacturer's web site confirms its ceramic. Got Return Authorization.
Then I read you experience of getting bigger pads. Based on your experience with size I decided to hold on to the ceramic pads until I do brake job.
I ordered BECK/ARNLEY (Part# 0871679) semi-metallic. After receiving it I compared it with previous EBC brake pads. Semi-metalic are about half inch bigger then ceramic.
This week end I will do brake job and will find out which one is correct size. Hopefully one of them should fit.
