Please help on Resonator

I have a 2007 Camry SE, will a resonator cause my car engine to sound like a vaccum cleaner when accelerating? When I am in idle, it sounds like a vaccum by either the engine or intake. One person suggest it be the resonator, what are your thought on this..?

How the heck do we know????????????

It could be an intake leak, a vacuum leak or an exhaust leak......

If you want someone to troubleshoot for you without seeing and hearing your car, please give more details.

When did it start making this sound? where exactly do you hear it, and what do you do to make it go away? (If it does go away) etc... etc... etc...

Before you go too far... check the simple stuff. Did you (or your dealer) recently take your air cleaner box off to replace the air filter? Did it get put back on correctly? It might have a gap where the top goes on that you can hear it sucking in though. Check all your vaccum lines and make sure nothing is dry rotted or has a split in it. Make sure everything is tight. Then let us know if it is more serious.

Thanks

When I first got the car in Jan 2010, it has always made this noise when driving but really didnt mind it. When driving, it sounds like a vaccum going vrrrrrrrrr right where the engine and intake are. Now I took it to Toyota to have it looked at and was told I need a new resonator. The guy told me that with SE models they put a certain resonator to make it sound like it does for a sporty sound/look for the car... Heck if I know.

I was quoted $500 + labor for this but before I do I wanted to make sure I wasnt getting ripped for my money and maybe someone could give me some ideas on what to look for first.

I will took a look at all those things you mentioned and see what I can find and reply with my findings.

If you are set on replacing the resonator because you don't like the sound it makes stock, i'd buy an aftermarket oem replacement and pay a mufflershop half of what you'd pay the dealer or even less. But if it's always made that noise and it's nothing new, i'd say my troubleshooting I gave you means nothing.

I personally like the stock sound of my car. I wanna replace the exhaust as my next mod. I'd say you're car is normal and just fine sounding like a lil vacuum. My dad had a dodge caravan that sounded like a frickin Singer sewing machine... Now that POS was annoying...
