5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Have a 2007 Toyota Camry V6 100,000+ miles on it. About a week ago out of nowhere, a message appeared saying something like "Check VSC System" along with the skid/traction (the light with the car sliding) control light, and the check engine light. In addition to this when idling the engine shakes, but it comes and goes. I went to Auto Zone to do a diagnostic check, and got 9 codes. I don't exactly remember what those codes were but they were basically the same thing for each cylinder, which was cylinder misfire, as well as something about an ignition coil. The Auto Zone guy recommended at the very least to try some Gumout, so hoping it would help a little I put in a double dose of Gumout. I suppose it did help a little, the shaking of the engine stopped for a while but came back soon enough, but it occurs less than it did before (going to work no shaking, coming back from work shaking). I am fearing going to the dealer as they will do a diagnostic and attempt to charge me up the a$$ with unnecessary fixes . Basically I just need to get rid of the misfire problem. I am thinking of changing the spark plugs, which I should have done anyway by now. I hope this will fix the problem, going to the dealer is a last resort for me. Please give me some suggestions on how to fix this.
Within the past week or so someone else reported essentially the same thing and there was some discussion, so go back and search the threads for the past 10 days or so for this topic. The coils likely didn't fail but something upstream from them may have. You really need a service manual to troubleshoot this stuff if you don't want to pay a mechanic. As for the spark plugs, it won't hurt, but they are expensive little suckers and should be good for about 120k miles, so you are getting close.

I did some light searching initially, found similar threads but nothing too detailed on possible fixes. Guess I'll go back and look some more. Thank you for the suggestions and quick reply.
Check my problem with my Avalon (Herb7777) on the third gen Avalon. Simular problem, have not solved it yet, have Denso Plugs ordered. Mine may be a weak fuel pump.
Try www.rockauto.com for parts. We have purchased many parts from them.
You need to find out exactly what the codes are before you can really start to troubleshoot. If it said that every cylinder is misfiring and the gumout helped for a bit, Im thinking that maybe you need to replace the fuel filter. It could be partially blocked and is restricting the flow of fuel.
You really need to find out exactly what the codes are first though, otherwise you are just taking a stab in the dark.

Toyota: Like other cars, only better.
I had a code of P0353 the last time. Before I replaced two coils it was P0353, P0302, P0306. I replaced those two coils then I had P0353, P0301-P0306. The I had it checked again and the only code I had was P0353.
I now have all the plugs out and will replace them(40K miles on them, 145K on the car). All the coils ohms check the same. Looking in the coil plug the right two connectors have no continunity with any of the 4, the left two have .346 ohms. I assume all the coils are ok.
I have not found the fuel filter or a place to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. I would like to see what pressure I have while driving.
I have a thread on the third gen Avalon.
Know one knows what is going on so far with my car.
Thanks
Installed new plugs, 2 new coils #1 & #5, moved #3 to #4. All coils (old and new) check the same with an ohm meter. Now the codes have changed from P0353 coil C P0301-306 to P0354 coil D and P0301-306 miss fire every cylinder.
I don't know what coil C or D is. Can anyone help?

C is #3, D is #4. Which makes sense if #3 was bad.
Fix that and see if these go away......probably not.

That was the problem. I replaced coil D on cyl #4 and all my problems are gone. Cleared all codes. I am glad I moved coil 3 to the front where I could get at it easy.
Thanks for your help!

I had a similar problem and replaced the coil in cylinder #4 (dealer said location was middle front) as well as spark plug. Check engine and vsc light went away for 5 days and now has come back on. In some forum I read there was a TSB for this problem, does anyone know the TSB #?
Initually I had a code to replace ignition coil D, so I replaced it and now I'm getting a code for coil F. I would replace coil F if I knew it would solve the problem but I'm scared another code will come up again. I don't want to waste any more money unless this is actually the problem. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I see it has been 3 weeks since you posted this but #1 (A) cylinder is on the back of the engine, passenger side of the car, #2 (B) is on the front passenger side and so on with the odd numbers on the back and even on the front.
I purchased my coils and many other parts from www.rockauto.com. I put the new coils on the back of the engine so if another old one went bad I could change it easily.
