Gen5 Have I damaged my engine?

hello mates:

2005 gen 5 camry: got 110,000 miles, have gone over 7,000 miles without changing oil, checked the oil and noticed it was close to low, was unable to get to a service station to change the oil, so i bought some oil at the store and put in half the can, but the oil was 10W40, so now i have mixed it with what i think what was in there was 5W30 or 5W40?

anyway, i will go to a station and change it immediately, but was thinking will this cause extreme sludge? how can i get rid of the sludge since i went to long on this oil change. by the way, this is the first time since i own the car that i have went so long without changing oil. prior to this i always changed it at 3,000 miles for 5 year.

thanks for kind feedback mates.

just get the oil changed asap with some 5w30 and you will be fine. Sludge is something that builds up over time due to neglect and abuse. 10w40 isn't recommended because toyota engines like lighter oil, but it shouldn't cause any serious damage over a short period of time... especially if it was only half a can.

Dont worry at all. Conventional oil changes are good for 5k. Dont listen to the whole 3months 3k crap, its just to get you to change your oil more often.

If the oil level was will on the dipstick you didnt cause any damage. Youll start damaging stuff when your at least a quart low.

Just change it regularly, no harm done. My realative but 350k on his land cruiser with shodyy jiffy lube oil changes every once in a while.

Did u use regular oil or synthetic? If it's synthetic than u r definitely still ok. If it were regular than you are less 'ok'.

Yes, check the oil level more consistently. You mightg have sludge. Make certain that the PCV valve is clear and more importantly, that the hole into the vovle cover is clear and open and that you can blow air freely into it and that it be noted at the open oil filler cap. You should actually be able to pour oil into that little hole and it flow in. Be concerned that the valve cover is gooped up and not letting the engine to breath. Next, since you are going to change the oil shortly, add .5 quart of any type of ATF to the engine and let it clean on the way to the oil change. ATF is very detergent and does a good job of getting the crap out. If you concerned with sludge, and at that mileage you should be, add about a cup of ATF to the new clean oil and then change the filter every thousand miles, topping off with oil and a little more ATF. That will help to clean the engine.

If you were only a quart or so low at the 7K mark with a 110K mile engine then I don't see much to worry about. Also by that point the oil you had in there was pretty worn out and thin, so putting in a thicker oil was a help, not a hinderence. Change your oil and monitor oil useage every thousand miles. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Gen5 one more question for the brethren

at high milage on the car like over 100K miles, can the camy I4 engine switch over the synthetic oils? like mobile one? or is it better to just keep using 5w30? which 5w30 oil company you guys swear by?

If you have put a 100k miles on an engine using dyno oil, then switching to a synthetic at this point is largely useless. The wear has already occurred and there is no putting the genie back in the jar. Just use dyno and change often to avoid sludge.

Nothing wrong with running an extended oil change interval or mixing grades.

Nothing was damaged. No risk of engine sludge by missing only one oil change.

Sure, you can switch over at any mileage.

There's plenty of high mileage synthetic oils out there, but you should check out Valvoline Maxlife or Maxlife Synthetic. Both come in 5W30.

It's gotten consistently good reviews on BITOG.

Pennzoil Platinum seems to be pretty well liked over at bitog too. I'm planning on switching from Mobil 1 to PP at my next oil change.
