P0031 - Bank 1 Sensor 1 Question

Hi all,

I am been trying to get some concrete answers to some of the questions I have and hope someone can help. Been reading and reReading posts from earlier users but I could not get all the answers. I have a 2003 Camry LE 4 cylinder with engine 2AZ-FE. All questions are in red. Below are the steps I took as well.

1) My engine light lit up
2) Bought an Engine Code Reader Innova 3100
3) Plugged it in and it gave me a code P0031 - which coresponds to the Sensor located at Bank 1 Sensor 1.
4) Found the diagram at http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh....php?p=2220872
5) I assume that this is the location posted below. I circled the sensor and squared the electrical connector?
6) I looked under my hood and it read that my car conforms to California Regulation for emission. This means I have to purchase a Cal part?
7) I went and purchased a ngk 24293 since I read I need to purchase either NGK or Denso for dependability.
8) I purchased an
oxygen sensor wrench. oxygen sensor wrench.

9) Last night I sprayed WD40 around the sensor to loosen it.
10) I found out today the sensor I purchased was wrong since the cabling was only 5 inches and not the 2 ft I need even though it said preCat.

Questions:
1) Can someone point me to the right sensor model (NGK or Denso)? One that is pre-terminated.
2) Do I have to unconnect the battery (black-ground)? Some say yes others no.
3) Can someone confirm if I correctly located the sensor 1 bank 1?

Thanks

You located the sensor correctly. If the parts store did not have a sensor with a pigtail long enough, and the correct connector, then try a foreign auto parts store if in a big city or failing that, the dealer. They won't be that much more as a general rule. I'm reasonably certain that Toyota did not build a different configuration for California. California law just requires the label to specifiy that it conforms with their standards.

Gen6

The Toyota Parts site lists the sensors separately (Fed, CA emissions) as it does the charcoal canister, exhaust manifold, and front exhaust pipe of the I4.

njerald,

I went to the website to look and found the part you listed.

Oxygen sensor, Front, US built w/Federal emissions SENSOR- OXYGEN - 2.4 liter List Price : $134.35
Your Price : $92.89

but when I clicked on the view illustration and clicked on the part it shows (#2) I get

Sensor, Air/fuel ratio SENSOR- AIR FUEL RAT - 2.4 liter
List Price : $213.06
Your Price : $147.30

Also I called my local Toyota Dealer for the senor and was quoted $213. He did not give me the part number though. I am assuming he is quoting me the air/fuel sensor which I hear is basically an O2 with a different name?

Yeah I read that post before asking. I got it is kind of an O2 and I got it is not yet the description is
Oxygen (A/F) Sensor which is like saying it yes to both? Read up on any post I could find with heading P0031.

http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h37.pdf
is what I found and the only thing I can see from the paper is the range of the sensor narrow or wide.

I also read on other forums that some people can use them interchangeable front and rear but I find that is wrong if the pdf is correct.

Gen6

I have deleted a number of my prior posts. I thought you had a GEN6 and I re-read and you have a 2003 so my part numbers, TSB are not applicable.

The Toyota website is still applicable and they throw another wrinkle in with different listings for either (Japan built or US built) w/CA emissions. They are cheaper for the 2003 though. $147,19 list, $100.76 + shipping.
