Single to dual exhaust upgrade

G'day fellas. Im now in the starting stages of research for my next mod that i really dont know much about. And doing various searches here, and on other forums there isnt really much about a single to dual exhaust upgrade for an i4 or an i4 camry at least.

Im aware that someone has done this, and someone has done this in australia too but the previous owner did this mod so he doesnt really no much about what was gained from it etc etc.

So i was hoping some experienced members here would shed some light on the topic. Im mainly worried about losing back pressure, drone and low end power. Im thinking of doing a set up from the engine to the tips.

As i said, im pretty n0ob with this so any information regarding this would be excellent.

Cheers fellas

Yeah i looked at that. And yes they talk about the install and set up, but there wasnt really in depth conversations regarding figures, gains or looses which is what i want to know about.

you will lose more than gain. Losing some back pressure will reduce your low end. It's just like going with 3 inch piping when you don't have any other mods done to the motor.

I would think there would performance loss ont he low to mid range power, and maybe pick up a small small amount on top end..

not really enough to make it worth while..

I assume your doing it mainly for looks though?

I really wouldn't worry about it or think about it too hard, i mean it's a 4 cyl camry, exhaust modification isn't going to really make much of a difference faster or slower, it's mainly going to be for looks and sound..

Thanks for the additional info fellas. Yeah its mainly for looks due to the RK rear bumper lip.
To chrome mufflers in the rear would really set it off IMO

Does it really make sense to you that someone would do an exhaust upgrade and still use stock mufflers?

Hmm, I'm curious on if everyone relocated the carbon canister or moved it. When I put my dual TRD exhaust up on the left side, it touched the thing so I opted to have just the right side for now. Would anyone have a picture on the set up? I was thinking the heat shield would "protect" it but I'm not quite sure...

Good question eyezack! Hopefully we get an answer soon!

I went to some exhaust shops today, this is what they told me;

Exhaust shop 1) Willing to build a Y pipe from the res back. If he supplies to cannon exhausts (dont really want but i like the stainless steel/chrome look), job will be around 850 dollars. Asked him if he could do 2.25inch piping and he said its fine. Wont lose back pressure or anything at all by upgrading to a dual exhaust.

Exhaust shop 2) Willing to build Y pipe from the res back. However, this guy took the time and explained the job to me. He said if i kept the 2.25inch piping from the res back i will actually lose power. Since im breaking the pipes into 2, he said i should use 2 inch piping to the mufflers and chuck a 4 inch muffler tip at the end. Makes sense, but i dont know how accurate his knowledge is as 2 different places (reputable) are telling me 2 different things. Only thing i dont like about this is the 4 inch tip. I like how my vibrant mufflers go from 2,25 to a 3 inch tip at the end.
I found this on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vibra...Q5fAccessories
If i were to find a 2.25 inlet and a 3 inch outlet and buy 2 of them, would i be losing back pressure and therefore low end power by keeping that set up? or should i listen to what he said and bring the piping down to 2 inchs?
Another bad thing with this guy is i HAVE to buy mufflers through him. He said if i supply mufflers the job will be approx 700, if i dont and he gets the mufflers..the job will still be 700. But dodgy which i brought up and he said i have to pay for labour rarar

exhaust shop 3). Again, willing to do the job but didnt explain the job to me. I had to explain to him what exactly i wanted and it seemed like he was just agreeing with me. If i supply the mufflers, he will build the Y pipe from the res back for $250. And around 600 if i didnt

I like the price of exhaust shop 3, but i dont like how it seems like they dont know anything. Hence why im putting it out here now so i could just get whatever i need and tell them to do the job for a cheap price.
I like the knowledge of exhaust shop 2, he seemed like he knew what he was talking about but im not convinced on that set up of making the piping smaller
Exhaust shop 1 seemed like he was just trying to make a sale. But its a very reputable store on my end of town, and if i can get exactly what i want done (without losing any back pressure) ill most likely go to him for the job.
I like the sound of the vibrant, but upgrading to dual vibrant in stainless steel chrome? Would it produce the same sound? if not, would the sound be deeper/louder? or more high pitch and quieter?

What do you guys think? I wanna try get this done in 2 weeks. And right now im looking into importing the mufflers from the states!

Any info would be great fellas!
Thanks in advance!

try to go for something besides the vibrants. they nice and all but pretty heavy so depending on if the shop takes that into consideration they might flop around in the back.

My $.02

I am planning on doing the same thing in the spring. Seein your doing it first you can be my guinea pig haha.

If it was me, i would go to exhuast shop number 3. I would buy 2 Apexi WS2's for about $500, take them to shop number three, and boom, the cleanest exhuast set up in my opinion for $750... Its a i4 camry, they are slow, and always going to be slow. Maybe you loose a little low end power, but i doubt it will be anything that will make you say "Shit, i hate this exhuast."

I would be 100x more pissed if it didnt come out looking how i expected or sounding ricey rather than losing power.

I should probably update my situation. I sold my left side since I wanted to go lower and I didn't want to cut up the stock piping of the TRD muffler. Now I'm limited by the frame of the car lol
