ATF dipstick fluid change interval

I have a 2005 Camry with 81,000 miles. I purchased it at 40,000 as Toyota certified. Not sure if the ATF was ever changed. My mechanic suggests replacing the Automatic Transmission Fluid. The transmission fluid dipstick states “No need to replace under normal driving conditions”. The Toyota scheduled maintenance guide indicates the fluid should be inspected every 30,000 miles, but I see no mention of replacing the fluid anywhere. How can Toyota design a transmission that contains fluid that lasts forever? Should I have it changed against Toyota's recommendation?

Type WS fluid is designed for 100k miles. You are getting close. Look at the fluid. What color is it? If it looks old and nasty, then change it and you might feel better about life, but make sure the mechanic uses the right fluid, or you will regret the day he talked you into the job.
