oil pan gasket

Hey guys. Gat a leaky oil pan gasket and bought a fell pro gasket. It came with the black rtv sealant. 2 questions, do i put this on both the pan or the engine block or both. Also, anyone know what the torque specs are. Thsi is a 2003 camry with the 4 banger.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Sealant on the top or bottom of the gasket, or both top and bottom? You can answer this question yourself. Which side of the gasket do you want the oil to leak from?

I don't know the torque value. I don't have a manual for that car, but it isn't as critical as the torque on a connecting rod. Snug the bolts up to about the same tightness all the way around in an alternating pattern, and then go over them all and make them tight, but not so tight they will break. If the pan is still on, crack one bolt just a bit and then tighten it back to give yourself a feel for how tight it is. I've never used a torque wrench on pan bolts and never will.

I actually think the torque is very critical, esp to get all the same. Go to the store and check the manual for the torque value or wait until someone posts it here. I have had better luck with gasket sealer than RTV. It is ~$4 and the store would know what to give you.

That's good. Thoroughness is a virtue. I rebuilt my first engine at home with a little supervision from my father in about 1960. It was another 15 years before I bought my first torque wrench, and then often wondered why. They do have their place though, and sometimes the jackwagons who repair cars without one are doing you a disservice. If you do this enough you will develop a torque werench in your wrist that will be just as accurate as any tool from SnapOn.
