Knocking Noise

Hey Toyota Drivers,

I dont know if this has been posted or not. Could not find anything in the threads but if so please forgive me...

I recently notice on my 07 Camry SE with 60,000 miles that when putting the car in D after it has been in parked ( no matter for how long ) and accelerating to leave, there is a knocking noise like a thump under the driver side gas pedal or brake pedal which ever one usally gas pedal. Now its only one knock then goes away. Any idea on your thoughts on this..?

I remember reading a post on this last year.... If i recall correctly, I think the post said that clunk was the brake system or the ABS making the sound (on these model year cars) and that the dealer had told him the sound was "normal".

It is ABS self check noise. All my toyotas with ABS do this and it is described in your owners manual (it is written in bold at the page describes brakes section for both cars that I own). It only do this whenever the car is restarted.

Please be more specific.. you said when you restart, do you mean when you start up your car?

I took a look in my manual and did not find anything on this. You say this is a BS problem. Should I be worried or since you say this is normal should i just not even worry about this.?

Now after do some testes, i found that when i go down a steep hill and braking softly i feel the thump in the gas pedal. are you telling me that my ABS is kicking in and this is normal....

It should be at the bottom of the page on the brake section (at least it is like that in my solara manual).
If you feel thump (pulsation) when you brake, it might means your rotor might be warped.
ABS check should only make a noise after you start the car and when first time you move (at around 15mph) only. It should not make any noise after that (more like the auto door lock when you put your car in D, but only do it after you start the car).

Below is my reply to a post. After I submitted my reply, I found that the post is one year ago. Then I looked for more post about this noise, and found your post.

My 2010 Camry has the same noise and comes out exactly as you described. If you want to hear louder noise, you need to park for at least 30min. The reason is to let the engine and connected parts to cool down. The Toyota specialist at one Toyota Service diagnosed as normal. His explanation is that: the noise comes from the connection point between engine and exhaust pipe. He said that, in the past, the exhaust part that connects to engine was made of metal, but now is made of hard plastic. When this hard plastic part is heated by the hot exhaust from engine, it expands and gives this click/cluck noise. That is why you hear just one time after you take off. As for my camry, the noise comes out within 30 feet after take off. I feel it annoy. Who knows if it is normal! If the plastic part expands so vigorously, can it be normal? We should ask Toyota to fix this problem!
If you have more information about this noise, please share with us. I want to know if every camry has this noise.
Thanks.
