5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My car is over 58,000 miles. It usually gets 227 miles at the half tank mark. Now it gets about 217. What do you think I should check? The idling is a little rough. Will the 60,000 miles service fix it? I change oil myself.

You're talking about an approximately 4% drop in mileage. Discount gas stations selling off-season blends could account for that, or low tire pressure, or slightly more aggressive driving habits. It could be any number of reasons that you'll have to eliminate one by one.

only a few miles difference doesnt mean anything much, im not sure why your so worried. every tank will get a different set of mileage depending on the condition and the way you drive varies. like traildust said there are just too many things that factor into 4% drop in gas mileage.

I filled up gas at the same gas station. I drive it mainly to work. There is little difference between the last two fill-ups.

The ever so slight difference in your mileage could be attributed to the hot weather(a/c running longer cycles, stopping at an extra red light, idling a little longer to cool the cabin--lots of things. This is nothing to worry about.

This is the fifth summer of this car. I checked the mpg daily. This is the first time I noticed such change in mpg.

Low tire air pressure, low engine oil, a dirty or over-oiled K&N air filter, ambient temperature all could be issues. Another common thing I noticed in all of my cars is that the fuel gauge is not always consistent.. It is more of a guide.
I agree with njerald- if for no other reason that you said you cleaned your K&N 5k ago... the oil from the K&N filter can gunk up the filament on the MAF... eliminate easy things first, I'd try that first.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense.

I still think you are a bit anal about this, but just one other thing. Do you have alcohol in your gas? Have you always? Many areas are mandated to have 10% alcohol and some samples have rendered as high as 15% alcohol. This kills gas mileage. See if you can get some real gasoline and see what mileage you achieve. Might have to go to Nevada to find it.
Oh, and another thing........I also have an 07 V6, and we know that the half tank mark is not the half tank mark, but my car will hit that mark anywhere from 190 miles to 285 miles. Even if you are religious in how you fll the tank, 10 miles difference represents a quart and a half to two quarts of gas. Unless you are filling the tank while the car sits on a scale, I doubt that you or anyone else can so precisely measure out the fuel load. Checking the filters and keeping things clean is something you should do in the normal course of things and really shouldn't even be a point of discussion here.

I always get gas from Costco. I have said nothing abnormal happened to the car recently. The fuel gauge is always lower after it sits overnight. I think this is typical of the gauge. Since I know this phenomenon, the mpg is measured under similar situation. I agree with Joe Dirt and njerald's advice.
