Hey all. This will be my thread for ones to follow along who may want to create their own air intake instead of buying the Camry i4 k&n intake kit, which I have not yet found for the new 2.5L. I'm doing this mod on the most part for sound, while still on a budget.
Here's my plan.
I plan to use a universal air sensor coupling (made by Spectre) where the red circle is drawn, replacing the connection that is already here. Everything from that point forward will be removed, like the stock airbox/intake. Everything within the blue circle will be left alone. Then, I will either take a short extension piece, made by Spectre, again, and connect it onto the new coupling, then put a high-flow cone filter on the end. Or, I'll just put the new cone filter directly onto the coupling itself.
My question is, will the black pipe that will connect to the new coupling be strong enough to hold up the new filter? Or should I be thinking of fabricating a support?
This should run just around 50 dollars, it'll give me the sound I am looking for, and I won't have a drone like I would if I were to just weld on a Magnaflow on my car.
I have searched for the past day, and I have not found anyone who has done something like this. I was hoping for some suggestions, as I am probably going to be the guinea pig of this method.
It's also come to my attention that I need to make a custom MAF mount/filter support. The toyota adapters for the MAF do not fit from AutoZone.
Edit: I tried a method yesterday, a spectre high flow filter, clamped onto a universal toyota MAF sensor coupling. There were two problems with this: the intake was heavy and needed a support, or at least half of the stock airbox to remain in order for the intake to be held up, and the sensor didn't fit.
I'll shop at pep boys tomorrow to see if any other products are available.
if you need help pm me. i make custom intakes and i posted that thread. i can give you the entire parts list fro what you need if need be. if you want mid range to low end power use the spectre filter the ridiculously large I.D. (interior diameter) helpd the lower end. If you want top end power, use a k& n filter from their site again i can send you the part number it's still like $40 for a k & n filter. BTW, the 2.4L intake works just fine on the 2.5L. If you look the tubing is routed the exact same way. Also, you have to use a special maf plate for toyota's to change the I.D. of the maf sensor adapter to 2.5" so the maf sensor doesn't read wrong. the maf sesnor is made up of several sensors: IAT (intake air temperature), air volume sensor, and air velocity sensor. Since the maf sensor adapter for toyota requires you to take the maf sensor out of it's housing you have to make the new housing mimic the old one other wise the sensor is in the wrong placement.
