Gen5 Tapping/Rattling Sound from Engine

Hi Guys!

I'm fairly new to this forum. Let me say, this place is awesome.

I could use some help on an issue. Its pretty well documented by other Gen5 owners that there's a known issue with the tapping noise in the engine. I have an 2006 Camry SE with 98000 miles on the engine. I've posted fairly decent sound clip on Youtube with what I am hearing. I'll try to get a better recording of it. Can someone tell me if I should be worried. Any insight or advice on this is appreciated.

Since I heard nothing on the recording I would not be worried. But your ear could be hearing things that crummy microphone did not pick up. Engine tapping sounds could be valves, broken rings, burned rod bearings--lots of things. You need to take it to someone with a trained ear, and a stethoscope, and get a local opinion. Trying to get anyone here to diagnose this problem is like asking a cardiologist to diagnose a specific heart anomaly because your chest is hurting.

Here's a better sound of it. Would you recommend going to the dealer? I don't know who to go with.

Someone recommended running seafoam through it to see if it makes a difference.

The recording does nothing for me. Maybe someone else can get something out of it. The dealer can fix it. It's just a question of how much is it going to cost. For a fee he can spend some time on it and give you an educated guess. Heck, several people on this forum could give you an educated guess if we had our head under your hood. Ask your friends and relatives if they know a trustworthy mechanic in your neighborhood and try them as well.

The second clip kinda sounds like my remote control nitro car....sorry! But as gdanaher said, take it to a good mechanic to be properly diagnosed. Good Luck!

I had similar sound, its the intake manifold shield under the car, mine was rusted causing vibration that gave the rattling noise.

I think others have come to the same conclusion, that it was the heat shield. The OP should do a quick search and see what comes up.

My '05 2AZ does not have any rattling noise. Yes, it's a fairly noisy engine by nature but I can hear a distinct rattle in your video that I can't hear when my own car is running.

Ok folks!

Its been determined to be the PCV Valve to be causing that noise. They will be replacing it. On another note, both of my engine mounts need to be replaced due to wear and tear and vibration from the vehicle. And the major issue that was found was what I totally forget out. The Water Pump is leaking. So, these 3 repairs plus a TB Service comes out to be $900/-. Obviously, what's killing me is the lovely labor on all of this. I would do it myself, if I weren't so scared to break anything. If I had some mechanic friends that would help me out and show me the ropes, I would do majority of my own maintenance work.

My car should be back to normal, ready to hit the highways to Florida in 1 day or so.

Good to hear you figured it out, not so good that it will cost $900 to fix! Though its never too late to start learning how to maintain/repair ur car..it will save you lots of $$$ especially on labour! Just get a set of service manuals (I think camrystuff.com) and use them to show u how to take the parts out and how to put them back in!!

PCV valve and cleaning the throttle body would have been easier to do for me. The engine mounts wouldn't have been fun because they require the engine being supported by something else while being replaced. I remember seeing them all cracked. Water pump, for a newb, I don't I wanna get down and dirty fixing that. But its all good. I will be getting my car back today.

On another note, I was given an 2011 Camry SE as a loaner from the dealer. The car comes with dual exhaust, spoiler and body kit standard. It really grinds my gears they didn't do this when I bought my '06 Camry. I'm not too much of the fan of the interior. I'll take some pics and post them soon.
