Hi i have a 2007 Camry SE 2.4L. The car has 34k and the engine sounds like its a diesel. I wanted to kno is the the diesel sound normal for these cars? Its really annoying specially at start ups in the morning. Does the 2.5L sound like this too?

well i have a 2.5 and it's whisper quiet. maybe your lifters need adjustment, or your cam is wearing out. what viscosity oil are you using, and did you buy this car new.......??
if not, maybe the putz that bought it new, used whatever oil he thought he wanted to, knowing he wasn't going to keep the car long, you know, like a former lease car.........?? hell, maybe he NEVER changed the oil since he leased it.........!!!!!
Purchased it new been running Mobil 1 synthetic since. 5w-20. I heard somewhere the injectors are specially designed to be more economic, so it sounds like that. Duno if that's true but it sounds like crap. The car runs perfect no problems so far tho.
Definitely never heard of injectors making a car sound like a diesel. Heck, we have an 07 camry on our lot with 112k and it's still quiet as can be (It's a 4 cyl. too). I would go get that checked out....sounds like you might have a little bit of warranty left?

I'd try different oil. I've found that Mobil 1 makes a lot of engines noisier. Many people can't tell or don't care, but I'm sensitive to engine noises. With only 34k miles, the valvetrain shouldn't be out of tolerance already.
The 4 bangers make a click click click noise while on idle. It's not noticeable in the cabin but you can definitely hear it outside. It's shouldn't be as terrible as a diesel like you say but it is noticeable, my friend has a 2.5 and it does the same thing. I took it to the dealer when it was new and they told me that it's normal on all the 4 bangers.
The engine and drive train should be warranted beyond the 3 year 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Read your owner's manaul. If you are really describing a diesel engine noise correctly, then no, your car should not sound like that. If so, take back to the dealer after reading your warranty information, and have them just listen to it. If you are describng a light tick, tick, tick, then that can be considered normal. The fuel injectors make a slight ticking noise.
I can also suggest listening to other Camrys in your area. There should be lot's of them around. If you don't have a friend with one just go to a local shopping center parking lot and hang around a few minutes until one drives by. Listen to it. You may even try talking to the owner.
Our cars are chain driven, hence the loud engine noise. This is good news because we don't need to worry about having to replace timming belt. Remember; chain= loud, no replacement. Belt= quite, need to replace or will break= engine failure.
Ive heard a few sounding like mine. At the dealer once and at a parking lot. I found a video on you tube, it sounds just like this. Dont see why he's revving it but yeah sounds like that. He says its normal i just never owned a car that sounds like this.
I know that this is kind of old now but my 2007 Camry 2.4 has that same sound as the video and it's only getting louder and more obnoxious as time goes on. Anybody know what that sound is? Exhaust leak in the front maybe?
