5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I went from 23 lbs to 18 lbs, 5 lbs reduction in rotating weight on each wheel.. yes, the handling improvement can be felt, mainly the steering wheel is a bit easier to turn and more responsive.
Can you share some more details with us. What alloy wheels did you purchase? what size alloy? Are you weighing them with tires?
I got these, but it's gloss black machined - so it's half shinny half black, goes well with my white camry. I stayed with 16" so I can reuse the 16" tires and i figure the tires are cheaper for 16" down the road and I like the soft ride of the LE. I paid $478 balanced and installed - I'm not the type to spend 2 grand on rims you can see the gloss black machined at discounttire.
23 lbs is wheel only for the stock steel wheel, actually 23.2 on my digital scale, so with the hubcap you are looking at 23.5 lbs for each. guy at discounttire told me the alloy I'm putting on is 18 lbs after he looked up on the computer.
You can definitely tell the difference in a 5 pound per wheel reduction (or increase). Rotating mass is a big deal - especially on a vehicle without loads of excessive HP. Acceleration, braking, handling are all affected. Lighter might well translate into a bit better MPG too, if you aren't driving it hard.
I weighed my original steel wheel and tire on my bathroom scale. For what it's worth, subtracting the weight of the tire (I knew that from Michelin's spec sheet), the wheel came out to be about 25 pounds as I recall. So give or take some, yeah, it's heavy.
I swapped mine out for some OEM 16" alloys from an Avalon. Like you, I felt an immediate difference in ride/handling, for the better. I did the same thing on my '07 Corolla, swapped the steel wheels out for 14 pound 15" alloys from a Prius. Immediate difference there.
